CHICAGO - Delta Air Lines Inc said on Friday it will invest $1 billion over the next decade in initiatives that would limit the impact of global air travel on the environment, the first airline to make a commitment of that scale.

The aviation industry accounts for roughly 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions and has set out a plan to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020, even as air travel is forecast to accelerate. With this new investment, Delta intends to become the first carbon-neutral airline globally while helping to fund research and projects involving clean air technologies and the reduction of carbon emissions and waste.

As of now, there are not many quick options available for airlines to reduce their carbon footprint. Biofuels are in short supply and take years to develop, and there are no immediate prospects of newer jet engines that are more fuel-efficient than those currently in the market.

Yeah, right. And hunters are nature’s curators… 🙄

Glad Delta is stepping up! Though United is/has also been doing ALOT to reduce emissions

delta Please, stop planning and start founding. Little less conversation, little more action.

like carbon is the problem with delta. how about you stop dumping fuel on school children in their playgrounds and make some room for your passengers.

And seats built for humans

How about reclining seat projects?

clean air technologies: bicycles. the reduction of carbon emissions: abolish flying.

How about better seats?

And passengers will pay for it

Tickets will be going up

Carbon neutral? Is that just extortion to the environmentalist terrorists?

I’d rather they do something to reduce costs to the consumer and make flying more comfortable. waste

what good is it if your computer systems can be hacked and you're serving food/water that makes people sick or dehydrated?

Good luck can’t buy your way out of emissions and since we don’t have electric planes its such a scam...follow where the money goes...

Lest we forget that $1 billion is less than a quarter of Delta's 2019 net income, and it's 1.5% of it's total worth. If they wanted they could go neutral in a third of the time.

Lol....wokeaf how about more legroom?

And we will pay for it by raising airfares...it’s not coming out of Delta’s pocket

Good luck!

Lol. The company that still flies more than a hundred of the most polluting aircraft in the industry. It’s like Russia meeting carbon targets. They just shut down ancient factories.

Hi 🌹

I think they need to invest in their planes, seats and a new CEO

Rumor has it they are planning to clone pterodactyls and use them to fly passengers just like the Flintstones.

Which kind of fuel will they use or which kind of facility for removing CO2 from air? I am confused from that...

What blatant greenwashing: 'In the absence of more impactful short-term options, the industry has committed to a carbon-offset program that allows airlines to invest in verified environmental projects to offset their emissions.'

Delta needs to give me credit for giving them the idea about renewable energy through my tweets

Just so I’ve understood this correctly. The aviation industry accounts for roughly 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, so that’s 2% of 0.04%. Delta’s contribution of that amount is much smaller. To fix Delta will spend 1,000 million US dollars?

That will be very difficult given they've got the oldest fleet in the US (though they're slowly improving). AA = 11 years, SouthWest = 11.5, United = 15, Delta = 16. All but SW have some planes that are 20-25+ years old, but Delta has the most.

That’s like paying someone else to diet for you. Planes burn fossil fuels, lots of it.

Is dumping fuel on schoolchildren carbon-neutral?

🙄

And SAS airlines plans to become Skandinavian-neutral.

Pan Am has been carbon neutral for many years , they stopped flying. Just saying

They will accomplish this feat by not flying anymore because no one wants to ask permission to recline

There is fools everywhere.
