Australia could lose more than a third of all new Chinese international students if a travel ban is still in place at the beginning of the 2020 university year.

1min

The Morrison government extended the coronavirus travel ban for a third week, vowing to review the ban weekly. A survey found 32 per cent of Chinese students stranded in China would enroll at a foreign university if they missed the beginning of the Australian term. Universities would lose up to $2 billion if all 100,000 students stranded in China chose foreign institutions.

BS

So be it!

adv_australia My heart bleeds. Maybe we could refocus our efforts on innovating and producing something meaningful again as opposed to selling dirt and permanent residency pathways via the higher education system. And all to a single customer segment.

More room for aussies

Good who gives a toss

Nonsense. Would you really want to stay and study in China?

Poor Unis maybe spots can now be taken by students not paying big bucks to get in

FatherBob Australia should take the opportunity to expel every Chinese person, student or otherwise. They are eating your country alive from within.

Serves them right for being greedy.

Best move the government has made for some time.

Good give locals a spot in Uni

Imagine if Gillard did this when the WHO has not recommended it!

This is a self-inflicted problem. Australian universities relying for income too much on international students is a problem in itself, but then being overly dependent on one market shows plain incompetence.

This could be a bumper year for Australian students. Their marks should improve as the lecturers won't have to repeat things for non english speaking students.

That’s a shame , more spots for Australian citizens then ... 👌

Crickey does that mean there might even be some property left over to buy!

Borders must stay locked !!

Doesn't China already own the UQLD and now acquiring the UNSW through under the table payments 🇦🇺🇦🇺😭😭

So bad so sad stay away if your a threat to Australians health

Good

That sounds like, China is trying to force Australia, to except the students, with no thoughts of the virus, China's population of 1billion, they can afford to loose a hundred thousand, or so, with no problems.

Unrucky

Big deal. Health & safety of citizens first. This will not be long term

So online lectures don't work?

Imagine the costs when our health care system collapses from a viral outbreak?

-shrug-

We want healthy students. It will pass.

The money flow is in strife...over employment in unis with no work...reset coming

Sky spreading fake news again. 'if ALL 100,000 students stranded in China chose foreign institutions'. Australia has 600,000 foriegn students, not to mention more than than 200,000,000 in lockdown in China who couldn't leave even if they wanted

Who did the survey and how many were asked?

Well their country shouldn't have been hiding experiments on Biotechnology like these viruses

Doubt it, but that's their decision, we've made ours and not open to threats

Fantastic news for AUSTRALIAN students and Australian home buyers or renters.

Good, we should be looking after our own Students first anyway, but let me assure you, having the Coronavirus get out of hand here in Australia is far Worse than letting Chinese Students in for monetary gain or benefits period.

Try two-thirds

The whole program was always a fraud so high-6-figure wage uni bosses could skim off the top. Faking English-language skills tests; pencil whipping the whole program. Would you employ a uni nurse graduate that could not comprehend English and was coddled through the degree?

A very great Prime Minister named Gough made University education free for Australians. The country could afford it then & huge numbers of people, particularly young women, who otherwise would not have been able to afford it got a professional qualification.

Sounds like they have a choice to make

Australian's safety comes first

so? Alive important Or money important? that virus is deadly, the cost could be a person’s life. School wanna continue cash flow and more income, they should protect local generations can be continue first. If they like Australia they will come back after this chaos. not to worry

The safety of Australian's comes first.

The university is not me

This is a 'problem' we need to have for the greater good.

I really think this is the break up Australia needed to have .

Centrelink will be needing more staff at the counter

People should be worrying more about staying alive rather than students, supply chains and restaurants!!!

Shit happens

I am sure they can built their own in 10days. Study is not a free ticket into Australia

The safety and health for Australia comes first, not money. 👍🇦🇺

It's better than that bloody virus!!!!!!

Fair enough.

It is what it is, what is the alternative?

I though universities were for Australians to get higher education; not business to support educating international students .. why don’t we educate our own?

Who will deliver Uber Eats!!!!
