Image: Sam Boal/RollingNews.ie A DECISION ON whether or not to postpone or cancel the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Dublin in response to the Covid-19 outbreak is set to be taken by the end of this week, according to the Tourism Ireland chief Niall Gibbons.

The organisers said that the National Public Health Emergency Team is carrying out its own independent risk assessment and that they will receive their findings in the next week. On the impact of Covid-19 on tourism more broadly in Ireland, Gibbons said: “Our concern has moved from serious to very serious.”But, he said, ”we will bounce back from this in time”.

Gibbons also said that Tourism Ireland had postponed some of its European publicity campaigns about St Patrick’s Day in response to the spread of coronavirus.Worldwide, about 87,000 people have been infected and nearly 3,000 people killed since the virus was first detected late last year in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

Ah, so that's why their meeting on Thursday, probably preparing for the political junkets across the 🌍 on Paddy's Day🛩🛫🛬✈

People have their tickets ✈️ & will come anyway Alcohol kills germs. We will wipe out that virus in one day & be an example to the world 🦠 St Patrick’s day is a Public Health Service 🥳☘️🥳

Martial law should be introduced and the country should go into lock down until this virus has passed

Cancel it it's only a massive long day drinking session that's all it is.

No one will come, especially the Americans.!

Cancel it.

Surely it’s time to suspend flights from Italy?

It's only a pagan piss up anyway

Ahh Harris FineGael will make an announcement on his own bat tomorrow evening. He's gunning for Leo's job.

Pity it didn’t happen during pride

Call them off so we can drink in comfort without having to freeze or drown watching poxy parades.

We coped with postponing it during the F&M outbreak. And the rescheduled celebrations were great.

Well now if the Ireland-Italy game has been called then the decision is obvious

Jaysus they will cancel breathing next ...🙄

Precautionary principle should apply. The Irish health service is inadequately resourced to address a major outbreak.

I would much prefer, in view of lack of health resources in Ireland, that the most pessimistic assumptions are made in planning for Covid-19 containment. Complacency in the face of a new and unpredictable threat is a greater treat than overreaction.
