For many tourists, the iconic Koala is “their favourite thing about Australia,” however due to the recent catastrophic bushfires and problems facing the species, “we are as a nation flirting with their extinction,” says Sky News host Peter Gleeson.

“The time has come for a national rescue mission to help the koala,” Mr Gleeson said.

He said estimates by the World Wildlife Foundation has predicted there “are just 300,000 koalas left in Australia, and they will be extinct by 2050”. “Mother Nature has conspired to drastically cut koala numbers but as humans surely we have a responsibility to ensure we do everything possible to protect these animals”.
