Swinburne University Dean of Health Sciences Professor Bruce Thompson says while social distancing measures are key to mounting an effective fight against COVID-19, the government “happily” allows “hundreds” of people onto trains and buses each day.

As an essential service, public transport will continue to function as many other businesses close across Australia. Discussing the issue, Mr Thompson said, “we really need to increase our social isolation as much as we possibly we can”. He suggested that the government are presenting mixed messages by allowing hundreds of people to take public transport while enforcing social distancing in most other situations.

“We’re to get everyone to distance themselves from each other, however we’re quite happy for someone to stand on the train with another few hundred people,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. Mr Thompson said “the government is caught in a bind” when it comes to public transport and “we need to think of other ways that we can try and make it a lot easier for people to travel but also to distance themselves if they are using public transport”.

Where are the masks and disposable gloves? OK to bitch about young people enjoying the sunshine on Bondi Beach when the greatest risk they faced was getting there.
