Las Vegas Sands is scrapping a $10 billion project to open a casino in Japan. Short licensing periods, tough requirements, high costs and reluctant banks are deterring operators. It’s a bad omen for Tokyo’s gambling tourism ambitions, says sharonlamhk:

Las Vegas Sands said on May 12 that it would discontinue its pursuit of casino resort development in Japan. “The framework around the development of an IR [integrated resort] has made our goals there unreachable. We are grateful for all of the friendships we have formed and the strong relationships we have in Japan, but it is time for our company to focus our energy on other opportunities,” Sands Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sheldon Adelson said in the press release.

Macau-based Galaxy Entertainment on May 13 reported adjusted EBITDA fell 93% year-on-year to HK$283 million.
