Among the 7,000 homeless moved into hotel rooms to ride out the pandemic are people with compromised lungs and hearts.

In this Wednesday, April 22, 2020 photo, Bobby Daniel, 65, who is currently homeless, pauses for a picture at a hotel in Los Angeles. Daniel, who used to live in his car, said he knew the pandemic was a big deal when cafes shut down and he could no longer linger over an espresso, working on his laptop. He bought a scarce lavender hand sanitizer at Whole Foods and used it up fast. He was bowled over when he got into a Los Angeles hotel room after years trying to get indoors.

Newsom has praised the progress, although counties are still struggling to acquire rooms and squabbles have developed in some cities. Local officials say the process has been complicated as they find appropriate hotels, negotiate leases and get staffing in place. It’s something counties have never done at this scale.

“They had nowhere to go, and for us to send them out there while this was going on,” Senigar said, choking up. Clients must be referred for a room. The names of participating hotels are guarded to protect the privacy of residents and to shield hotels from people showing up wanting a place to stay. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to pay 75% of the cost of “Project Roomkey" for homeless people who are at least 65, or haveThe Padillas say check-in consisted of a security check, health screening, a recitation of the rules and paperwork.

“You feel hopeful, you feel peaceful, you feel fortunate, you feel grateful," Daniel says. “It’s almost hard to believe.”

Where are people getting vouchers to be able to stay in hotel rooms? I have to live on the street. I have no idea where I can get a voucher. I went to the Salvation Army, they couldn't help, the Tulsa Day Center can't help. Nobody ever tells me anything about this. 😞

Yep I hope some of the hotels were smart enough to refuse to do this

Those hotel rooms are never going to smell alright again.
