The federal government is determined to push the states to open their borders to mitigate the economic cost of COVID-19, according to Sky News Political editor Andrew Clennell. Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham told Sky News on Monday premiers who refuse to open their borders despite dropping COVID-19 case numbers will be “answerable to their tourism industry”.
The comments came after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk suggested she would keep her borders shut until September. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has also raised concerns people from NSW could visit New Zealand before Brisbane. Mr Clennell told Sky News if Australia's domestic border remain shut, then more "businesses are going to be going broke, jobs are going to be lost and we are going to lose a lot of money.
