Tourism Minister Birmo says new figures suggest closed borders are costing Australia about 5,000 jobs a week and an economic loss of $84 million a day.

Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham says new figures suggest closed borders are costing Australia about 5,000 jobs a week and an economic loss of $84 million a day. Queensland was the hardest hit state with a loss of more than 1,000 jobs a week and of $147 million in weekly economic activity. The federal government called on states to reopen their borders to allow the domestic economy to recover.

In New South Wales, 165 jobs were lost daily at a loss of $21 million each day, while Victoria saw 168 daily job losses with an economic hit of $19 million. Tourism has been the hardest hit industry, likely to suffer further after Qantas announced it was cancelling all its international flights, except to New Zealand, until October. Mr Birmingham said it was likely international travel would not resume until 2021.
