Exclusive: NSW faces a greater risk of a second COVID-19 wave than Victoria, with experts warning lax social distancing had exposed Sydney to another lockdown and a compulsory order to wear masks

"With the early case numbers in NSW, I am very concerned. People are mixing more. There is more potential for an escalation of epidemic activity in NSW," Professor McCaw said.

"The potential for spread is greater in NSW than Victoria. If this scenario had happened in NSW rather than Victoria, we might be a worse position than where we are now," Professor Bennett said. "People are urged to avoid non-essential travel and gatherings. Of particular concern is transmission in venues such as hotels and restaurants, the gym and social gatherings," Dr McAnulty said.Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced it would be mandatory to wear a mask in Melbourne from Wednesday, as the state recorded 363 new cases of coronavirus and three deaths on Sunday.

NSW Health said one locally acquired case reported on Sunday went to Holy Duck! restaurant in Chippendale, in inner Sydney, on July 10 between 7.15pm and 9.30pm. The parishioner visited the western Sydney church last Wednesday at 5.30pm, Thursday at 6pm and Friday at 1.30pm and 6pm. "The state's at a critical juncture. There is no room for complacency, in fact, complacency in the middle of this pandemic can kill," Mr Constance said.

Here's how much of a crap Eastern suburbs children give about public health rules.

For God’s sake...

Asher_Wolf Can you please remove the pay wall / free article limit on your Covid stories? This one seems like the sort of thing that should be accessible to all in the public interest

Not many people exploring North Head but plenty of people at Manly beach. All the Cafes, restaurants and pubs were busy. But we didn’t see many face masks. Is a Sydney shutdown imminent? Sydney Covid_19australia Ok

BREAKING: Bannon: Chinese Communist Party must turn over every piece of information, open up P4 lab, and let Americans can all the scientists around the world go in there interview everybody and get every document!

NSW must protest against lockdowns. They are a slippery slope and encourage government complacency in managing outbreaks.

If the weekend crowds in the Paddington/Waverley/Rose Bay triangle were anything to go by, it’s almost an eventuality.

Pre-emptive COVID protection next move for NSW?

It looks like lockdowns are the only thing that works. Half measures don't work with covid.

blah blah blah...what's on the other channel..🤔 blah blah blah...ffs 😒

ManeeshJuneja Better to show photos of crowded pokies, bars, and restaurants than people outside at beaches.

after 4months we are still getting 1000s returnees /wk

we should have a lockdown for 10 days as covid cases always happens in pubs Thai restaurant gym McDonald Shut down all shops No more overseas returnees

Lock down everything before it's too late

So initially we had to close everything because the hospitals needed upgrading (needed weeks)... they are now upgraded and can handle it. Are we going to pretend that covid is not the new flu? It's not going away and we can't close the state when ever someone gets sick?

There is no evidence, other than in frontline worker settings, that masks are effective in stopping the spread of respiratory illness. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that cloth masks EXACERBATE spread. THIS IS NOT SCIENCE-BASED POLICY

Shut those damn borders to NSW again AnnastaciaMP. Really concerned about how QLD might fare after school hols. Predict hot spot outbreaks in popular tourist areas.

Alarmed experts are the problem. Last three deaths were people over 90. Meanwhile...

Numbers and data. Unfortunately for the media the numbers and data just are not that scary. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Tax dollars matter more

Comments on the SMH website to this story are curiously readable. I agree that to refer to post covid is not accurate, and as to second wave or first, also remains to be seen. Stay safe.

Personally, I dont agree with another lockdown. If you are concerned about the virus, than stay at home and be safe. Many of us have a life to live and mouths to feed.

Another fear mongering article....

I remember when Gladys said pubs, nightclubs and gyms were last on the list to re-open. Because these cesspools were a risk. Then why the f*** are they open now? Sacrifice them for the greater good.

By ‘expert’, do you mean some figment of your imagination?

3 weeks NSW. Don't say you weren't warned! auspol

If I can abort a 9 month old baby in the state of NSW on the basis of “it’s my body”, I can sure as hell refuse to wear a mask for the same reason.

There should be mass testing in place already. NSW is going to be overrun

Close restaurants, pubs and clubs please.ScottMorrisonMP GladysB People won’t go out if they have no where to eat

Should be wearing mask the same as Victoria?

Feel NSW people are Covid resistant, the numbers haven’t gone up for the last 2 weeks and feel there won’t be a second wave in NSW ..

One good thing about Covid-19 is it has exposed the full extent of the gormless, ignorant, unthinking, selfishly stupid underbelly of our rich, diverse culcha.

There was no first wave in Australia. People should be scared of a first potential wave
