It was pure shame that originally impelled ultra-marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel to jump in the water.
Last year McCardel coached a 59-year-old farmer from rural Victoria to become the oldest man in history to a double non-stop crossing of the English Channel.Last week, McCardel received an exemption from the Australian government to travel to the UK amid the COVID-19 pandemic to try and add four more English Channel crossings to her resume.
"I was euphoric, jumping around my house, giving high fives, it is this huge, huge burden off my shoulders," she said. "It's a privilege to have the opportunity to represent Australia when so many people can't travel overseas, people have loved ones they're trying to connect with or other very valid reasons and not everyone is getting an exemption, so I feel very privileged.
The uncertainty has meant McCardel had to train meticulously to prepare. The pandemic has also had major implications on her training, with no access to an indoor pool for eight weeks.
