Short-term farm work is often not practical for unemployed Australians: Federal Government seeks international solution amid COVID-19 travel restrictions.

State border closures have also impeded fruit pickers and shearers, with"There are lots of people in New South Wales that need jobs so I don't feel there is a labour shortage in NSW at all, if people want to come in and want to do that seasonal work, they've got to be subjected to that 14-day isolation period," Premier Gladys Berejiklian said last week.

"I really do want to see Australians that are on unemployed benefits go and work — I just understand more than anyone, living in regional Queensland, that doesn't happen," Mr Littleproud said.In April, the Federal Government allowed Pacific Island seasonal workers and holiday makers already in Australia to extend their visas.

"That's not just because we've got demand — we have to work with them and their own sovereignty to get an appreciation if we can come to some agreement and that work is being done.

Snore

Can’t believe we can’t pick our own fruit and veg! What does this indicate about Australians. Surely an opportunity here, stop making Job Seekers attend farsical interviews. Let them do a stint in the orchards.

Of course not. While there is jobseeker & jobkeeper why is anyone going to work hard for less !

ABC is really on the nose since ITA got involved, she's become another Murdoch lackie.

Taxpayers are fully aware that there are some who do not seek work and bludge off society. Working at fruit picking is a legitimate means of working-for-the-dole. Those who exploit these workers through wage theft and poor accomodation should be themselves subject to gaol-time.

Fact check please. Lazy tropes, lazily repeated instil no confidence in national broadcaster.

I hope you FactCheck that assertion.

Fact check please

What blsht is this? Nobody in their right mind will work for the wages on offer except foreign slave labour. Are you run by Murdoch now because this is pathetic LNPCrimeFamily bulsht. Ita your fckd.

Aw cheer up bucko! I’m sure the market will work it out. if not, maybe you just need to be more competitive... boot straps!

This is what the IPA wants, is for us to turn on our once beloved ABC. ItaButtrose you should be ashamed of yourself.

Complex issue reduced to worker and social security bashing in this headline. Better off concentrating on getting Federal pollies back to work on national issues.

Perhaps paying decent wages, relocation costs, providing reasonable temporary accommodation, and cracking down on wage theft, & sexual harassment would help. Will $12-$25/hour pay maintain a permanent address & a temp one? This site says 'sleep in car'.

'off the couch'? What? So were they paying relocation costs to families? This is pure propagandist rubbish.

What about those farmers who kicked working holiday makers off their properties and made them homeless at the start of the pandemic. Will you mention them? They are a disgrace and should go bankrupt.

Have you ever picked fruit mate ? Not like making announcements its long hard and not that well paid!!

Stop payments if refused to work its that simple

People have to be able to afford to get to these farms, too. Dignity. Why can’t the government support jobs that afford people dignity? Dignity, permanent jobs, decent wages.

I mean you guys realise slavery is illegal right?

Maybe because they'd be better paid risking their lives working casual jobs in several aged care homes with no sick pay.

Maybe, it's because 30% of people on Newstart are over 55 and 35% of ppl have medical exemptions and or medical conditions and there's just not enough able bodied ppl to go around these low paying, poor condition jobs?

Much of our casual farm labouring is a scam- labour hire companies offer minimum wage jobs but charge for accommodation & transport to and from farms. The amount of actual wage after expenses is less than being unemployed. Plus lack of WHS and sexual harrassment of young women.

A blatant lie peddled out by the government and dutifully reported by the faithful media.

How does he know they are on a couch? I think he's just making that up.

FAKE NEWS...

Ring Tommy Robinson

Best wishes to all on the land ❤

Farmers want transportation reinstated

'What's your rate of pay... how do workers get to the workplace... and what are the pay-to-cost vs travel expenses to go do the work even IF transport is avaliable?' I'll bet the answer from every farmer on how workers get to thier farm & do the work at a profit will be weak.

Probably because there are so many stories of rape and mistreatment from people (mostly those from overseas trying to secure their visas) that have done farm work. It’s an awful culture and it needs to change.

no one owes you their labour. offer better wages and incentives.

Maybe the problem is the terms of employment they're offering.

Work for Peanut pay ? I want drive something like Toyota Sahara too not a Toyota Yaris.

'Entitled millionaire farmers who were gifted their wealth refuse to pay market wages and provide acceptable working conditions'.

D_LittleproudMP you wont even get off your arse to go to parliament. This is usual lnp shaming of the poor. Bloody disgusting. What are they paying workers? Proper covid safe workplace?

Fruit picking is hard work, often paid by the bucket. If the pay and conditions were adequate workers would come.

Did they have Covid?

How you could repeat verbatim such rubbish! ThisisNotJournalism

RichardTuffin Not a well researched article

The work is hard and immigrants often do it. My friend has a dairy farm and couldn’t find employees in their community. Americans are quite entitled and stay away from this work. They put a small home on their property for the immigrant workers. They have a different work ethic.

Politicians can live in Canberra without putting their hand in their pocket. How does someone with no spare cash pay for a return journey of 2,000 kilometres and six weeks accommodation and food?

You just had a story about poor Millennials. This story answers why they aren't doing very well. They are lazy and pampered and think the world owes them a living because of the Marxist indoctrination they get at uni.

Hey, there’s this fun thing called the free market - if you offer to pay living wages people will be incentivised to do the work! Crazy!

You mean people didn't want to move to the country for short term, low paid, seasonal jobs where they have no accommodation or support network ? How surprising!

thisisnotjournalism Shame on you

My nephews did this type of work. Sun up to sun down, accommodation, small room with no windows, dirty and shared bathroom & meals, even the bag for the fruit. Never made a wage, money was all swallowed up in charges. Bloody slavery!!!

What a load of rubbish.

So we luckily managed to find outsourced slave labour instead.

Modern day slavery!

Bit rich from politicians who wont get off the couch themselves to go to work - parliament ?

What is the point of you if you’re just going to repeat right-wing crap without actually doing some journalism first? You know, your jobs? Truly repugnant, just like Littleproud

Any proof? Nah, it's typical LNP bullshit conveniently promulgated by our ABC.

Here they go again.... Highly over paid Littleproud blames Covid supplement for people not getting off their couches and rush off to pick carrots in freezing cold fields .. The cheek!! They wont get off their couches to go to parliament!

RichardTuffin I am disgusted by the ABC using this cheap headline.

This is a perfect example of the idea that actual journalism should not be running quotes as headlines. (Or chyrons)

I went and picked fruit back in ‘87 and ‘88. We just rolled into a town went to the local CES office, registered that we were there, chose from the fruit harvesting job boards, went to meet the farmer to get their approval and details of the work, start next working day.

SO PAY MORE AND HAVE GOOD SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS. OBVIOUSLY.

Funny how when there’s a shortage of fruit the prices go up but the same invisible hand never quite gets around to applying the same notion to a shortage of labour

It’s not well paid and it’s fraught with abuse to pickers

so pay higher wages.

and we couldn't get politicians off the rorts

This is unsubstantiated government propaganda A B C news, what has happened to journalistic integrity? Oh Ita said no!

Oorrrr...& hear me out on this; could it be due to a GLOBAL PANDEMIC? Littleproud is NO ONE to lecture on work ethic!

Stuff that never happened... ThisIsNotJournalism

'We couldn't get MPs off the couch to go and sit in Parliament and do their job', said everyone else.

What nonsense free market model, you pay more you have workers supply & demand Lack of pay & abuse of conditions = lack of Workers simple math People need to travel distance at their own expense Unemployed on $40 aday can not afford Petrol forget the car Then if they are Paid

The AgedCare in Victoria would hope snottyMoccison GregRvnt and the minister for being missing in action would get off the couch.

thisisnotjournalism idk what this article is, but it's not journalism. No fact checking, no challenge to blatant lies. Shameful Kathy Sullivan.

Zacklywright That's what happens when people get paid for not working.

Littleproud's sadly lacking, short sighted and derogation-biased statement contains no realistic reasoning or understanding of the pros and cons of fruit picking work, and as such, it proves him unfit to comment on, or serve, the needs of the industry.

What are you ... 🤬🤬🤬🤬Telegraph ; ThisIsNotJournalism

Fact check please

Obviously our ABC team have never picked fruit ...or even lived outside of city comforts. They have gone from home to Uni to city jobs. No real life experience, never actually lived or worked over seas, or even regionally in Australia. Get real ABC!!!

Pay your workers maybe

You can now read this article with a more complete perspective from the side of unemployed workers. Unemployed take issue with minister's comments The Australian Unemployed Workers Union has slammed Mr Littleproud's comments as 'disgusting and not based in reality,' 1/

Where is the fact checking? How much pay are they offering? Does c-link consider fruit picking a job even though it’s seasonal?

Its more about how practical is it to do the work! If its a million miles away most might not even have the means to get there!

Jesus fucking Christ

I know here in our area the apple orchards were decimated by the fires, no fruit to pick.

You can't just up and leave your family for 6 weeks of picking here and a couple of months there, regardless of movement restrictions!!!

Low wages, sexual harassment and bad living conditions. What's not to like.🤔

If the pay is attractive then you will find plenty of applicants

Low wages. Extreme weather. Painful work Criminal contractors. Bad living conditions. Did i say hard work for shit money?

Wow ABC ....an actuaI factuaI report! Cafe owners saying the same thing! Job Keeper pays too weII.

Smells like Buttrose

When I complain about the price of my rent it's 'supply and demand', but when employers complain about not being able to get workers/good workers in low paid jobs with poor conditions it's 'lazy workers'.

This is bollocks. ABC why are you repeating this horseshlt? Farmers are turning away people. Bloody hell get off your arses and go do some journalism.

Pay more. Provide moving shade.

Maybe the farmers choosing cheap backpacker labor & visa holders over Australian workers for the past 10years might have something to do with it. If I want to read such trash I’d go to Skynews.

Pay them then. Farmers who accepted work for the dole schemes and exploited backpackers and international workers willingly destroyed their own potential labour market. Even if you could convince people to go out and pick fruit those jobs are gone as soon as the borders re-open.

Oh. I was wondering why there was a Rupert publication on my feed. Ffs, do I have to block ABC now? This is shite, how embarrassing for you all.

Scotty doesn't do much have you tried him?

so pay them better.

Care to back this article up with some actual verifiable facts, rather than just rehashing a Ministerial Press Release full of misinformation? Or is ABCaustralia now the propaganda arm of the federal government?

What utter tripe. How about applying a market based solution? Pay a decent wage and provide decent conditions.

Pay more then, right? Isn't that how markets work?

Trash article from the cuck factory.

Maybe if they paid people properly...

Lots of fruit picking jobs in Darlinghurst and st kilda.

If the farmers provide decent wages, conditions and workplace safety they would have workers. Businesses who rely on under paying backpackers and overseas illegal workers to run are the issue

ThisIsNotJournalism Do better ABC ffs!

Where's slave labour when you need it, huh?

Well when you have the Aussie PM shirking his work despite being paid over $500k a year, why the fcuk would someone getting paid a pittance want to do it either? 🙄🙄🙄 How much does fruit picking pay again?

Woolies and Coles are too big.The middlemen and the duopoly suck all the profits out. Nothing left for farmers and workers. The Government needs to get Woolies and Coles to divest fresh produce and let independent greengrocers compete fairly.

Murdoch ~ ABC

Pay decent money and they'll have no problem 🤷

Easy. Pay your workers properly.

Did you fact check this? Did you look into pay and conditions?

My daughter wanted a job picking fruit a couple of years ago when she was travelling. She was told they only take visa holders.

maybe stop being such horrible sex perverts and pay people properly and australians might want to travel five thousand kilometres to wolf creek to pick your fruit.

This is like complaining that you can't 'get people off the couch' to come give you a foot massage for two dollars. YOU'RE NOT PAYING ENOUGH.

Wrong! ABCFactCheck ?

And they won't get people to work for them, whilever they are paying very low wages, and don't believe in health and safety precautions.

You are dishonest

Ah shop lifting holidays to Melbourne are more fun these days......

Nothing to do with a global pandemic aye

Good to see that these LNP voters still don't understand economic incentives. People will leave the couch if the money is good enough. Isn't that your free-market mantra?

Farm workers need to be able to farm, non stop for the whole day. Harden your hands to manual labour. Soft hands and sore backs and feet is no way to start the day farming. Wear a hat 👨🏼‍🌾and long sleeves. Footwear is comfortable work boots 🥾 Take lunch and bottle.

Ooh, yes of course. I’m lazy because I don’t want to be treated like a slave and paid an 1875 wage for the pleasure. “2 bob and a smack in the face was all we got in my day...and we were grateful!” ScottyTheSaviour auspol ABCmediawatch Cover is, show solidarity

Fact check?

Farm work is very difficult physical labour, in hot uncomfortable conditions. The pay is poor and farmers often mistreat them. The living conditions are third world. In our rural towns they often live 15 to a three bedroom house. Or in run down vans. Get real auspol

Bullshit from Littleproud. What a shock. He is as useful as a chocolate teapot.

I've been picking fruit my whole life made good money it all changed when growers hired contractors to get the crops off the bin rates have fallen dramatically if you are not a star picker forget it

Note to ABC 'journalists': Don't go too hard on demonising the unemployed. If the government has another round of cuts, you might be joining their ranks.

Well, when a senate committee report showed widespread exploitation of temp visa workers, what do you expect?..

Bullshit. If farmers pay a decent wage then they'll have employees.

Your headline 🙄 ABC really

I’m sure there’s a good reason for that🤔

I like how they just skip over the sexual harassment from farmers and the notorious underpayment and price gouging in rural areas

tfw no temporary migrant workers to perform slave labour without healthcare during a pandemic

Have they tried paying fair wages?

Pay them better. Simple.

I heard this interview - you forgot to mention the rest of it - that people don't want to pay the relocation costs for only 6 weeks of work

Farm work has been distorted by the second year backpacker visa for years now. Most of it amounts to about 6-10 bucks an hour.

What's with these bizarre articles always resulting in the employers freely admitting their working conditions are horrendous and their pay rate is well below minimum wage?

KathSully go pick veggies for a season challenge

Where are these farms located? Do people have the means and transport to travel and potentially move to remote locations, often 100k + from their current residence, for a job that pays very minimally, is seasonal and requires a high level of fitness and physical ability?

Absolutely fucking sick of it.

I guess farms cant exploit the backpackers they usually would around this time of year as dirt cheap labour , how about using the PaTH National work experience program to get willing workers to help farmers , its way too easy to demonise than find solutions auspol jobseekers

If only farmers would pay the right money. Even award would be so a refreshing change. I reckon 9 out of 10 farmers steals from workers.

Many young women face dangerous conditions on isolated properties and sexual harassment and assault

Remember when Libs fkd around with visas/backpacker tax & it backfired on them because they didn't talk to farmers first...

I like how this is framed as 'laziness' by people whose understanding of fruit picking is rooted in the 1990s or before, not by the reality of what it is in 2020. TL,DR: It's only fit for transient workers or country locals.

This coming from a breakfast program that revolves around 'people sitting on a couch' ,

It's an offensive lie that Australian locals and unemployed in our cities won't move to the regions to work on farms. From my own experience and observation, orchardists and publicans prefer to employ young backpackers they can underpay and, in some cases, put the hard word on.

Dear ex Auntie, how fecking dare you. You do know *Not all on Newstart are young/fit/highly mobile. *They can’t afford the travel *Many were kicked of disability allowance onto Newstart *Single parents with kids as young as 6 were forced onto Newstart *Many older women Slander

Wow, the ABC too? Far out

Maybe wesfarmers can pay the farmers better and they in turn can pay their labour a decent wage

This trash isn't journalism. It's propaganda. Single government source for entire article, save the last two lines. Pathetic.

ABC clickbait heading. Might as well be A Current Affair.

I fruitpicked around Europe in my younger days. The pay & accommodation was good. At night we'd sit around fires & play music or listen to tall tales by people from far & wide we'd otherwise never have met. This tradition continues down generations. …/2

Most works are done through contractors who rings mostly Malaysian people from overseas on 10 to 15 dollar cash per hour, why would an Australian work below 22 dollar n cash

Usually when you are unable to purchase something you demand, you have to increase your offer 🤔

Australia has become all too comfortable exploiting international workers.

Maybe the pay and conditions are just shit? Supply and demand.

People needing a job can't afford to pack up and move for a seasonal low paid job. Publish the real reason, seriously.

I have done it! Hot, physically hard, dangerous, long hours, long travel times, substandard accomadation (tin leanto, dirt floor no bathroom or kitchen) for 10 bucks an hour!

I’m pretty unsympathetic. When I finished uni and was desperate for work I applied for dozens of agricultural support jobs, including fruit picking. I was rejected due to inexperience. Fair enough. Enjoy....

Its not necessarily the low wage.. has no one ever moved, its expensive breaking leases is costly, paying bonds are expensive, moving your stuff is expensive..

This is reckless reporting with a headline like that. The poor and working class of this nation work harder than anyone else and the media consistently denegrates and bullies them. It's getting to the point of abuse, especially during a pandemic with so much unemployment.

KathSully Words can't describe how disgusted I am with your article. The repugnant quotes from D_LittleproudMP are an insult to all unemployed people. Please tell me how this article is balanced and fair? Going by the comments, you've produced nothing more than a hatchet job.

24 an hour u tell me where to be and I’ll be there

Had a friend who was earning 85k picking fruit around Australia. Most fruit is picked on contract rate so the harder you work the more you earn.

Main SPIN media at work again

Here is the national broadcaster again running corporate and political talking points....

Maybe you should have offered appropriate compensation for menial and backbreaking labour.

How is someone on Centrelink going to afford to get out to these farms so they can work for shit money?

Sensationalist Click Bait Much? Standards dropping ABC, embarrassing and sad

I have heard many farms refuse to employ locals, and only employ international workers so they can rip them off. What about writing about them?

Invent a robot to do the work

If farmers were serious, they could form a jobs market, put up their pay rate and picking period, and if no interests, increase it until they do, then contract to pay that under government supervision. The government could pay the rate, then bill the farmer.

The country has thousands of people being paid jobkeeper, seeker, there is a workforces. As for the logistics, who goes is up to greater minds then mine, but we do have a lot of people who are getting money for nothing. Some a talking about paying more, we the consume would also

I was in Coffs a few months ago chatting to a Balinese guy who picked fruit. He was working 10+hrs a day and the previous day had earned $27. I’ll work beside any politician who wishes to “get off the couch” and show me how this is a livable income

Why are you parroting insulting sledges from Littleproud instead of investigating his claim? How about looking at Labour Hire companies who benefit from exploiting temp visa workers? you are wallowing in the gutter these days.

Maybe if they paid proper wages...

Of course it’s nothing to do with the nature of insecure, temporary work in hard to get to rural areas though, is it? It’s obviously lazy dole bluffers living high on the tax payers dollar 😒

Offer more pay. Free market and all. JoshFrydenberg

What a bad turn of phrase. It's not that you couldn't get them off the couch, you couldn't assure them they would be adequately compensated for their labour or give them short term housing and not gouge them for it.

Bs...

Yawn

a decent lawyer should be able to prove its fraud to contract anyone to conditions that breach legislation i.e. the minimum wage

Masters ask why underpaid, exploited, often sexually harassed “workers” don’t like their jobs.

What is never said about these jobs is that they are expensive to get to and the pay rate is one of the worst in the country. It's not that people don't want to work, it's that they can't afford to do these jobs. I did them as a teenager for pocket money, not a living.

We have noticed a great portion of the less skilled members of society are those who can’t work steadily for long periods. Also they are unable to engage with the employers objectives being principally concerned with how the world affects themselves.

Economics says that to increase supply you must pay more. If you want Australians to do this work, increase the lay and improve the conditions.

ABC presenters get $300K/yr for reading a teleprompter without getting off the couch.

pay them a living wage.

$8/hr is slave wages.

Oh please! You meant to say there are no longer enough backpackers to pay in peanuts

Tried it a while back great way to stay fit and earn a buck till something better comes along

So let’s get this straight it’s impractical to have unemployed Australians drawing unemployment benefits obviously already here to take up necessary farm work. Instead we’ll issue work visas and import workers from another country to do the farm work so we don’t inconvenience?

Hiring farm workers has been a huge problem for years, hence the overseas workers programs..

Are they paying wages? Thought not.

As I told Mr Adam 'stay on the couch and wait for handouts' Bandt not 2 days ago when he's claiming unemployment is so high...

This is bloody ridiculous. Farms relied on short term transient and low paid work forces, the current unemployed cohort are neither transient nor able to move their entire families into pickers' sheds for the season.

Perhaps farmers should stop moaning and accept that hard work in remote locations requires higher rates of pay. Every other employer has to compete for labour, what makes farmers so special.

People are so awful for not wanting to do exploitative underpaid casual work! Terrible!

The country is a healthy place. The couch is very unhealthy!

Why do you do these things?

Garbage headline. Article makes only passing mention of wages, travel, and accommodation. Not as much the realities of seasonal work. But ya it’s totally folks that “won’t get off the couch”. No doubt Ita helped write this, since we’re all lazy and need a hug.🤦🏼‍♂️

'We couldn't get people off the couch' - for the price they are prepared to pay

With all the government handouts at the moment, what would you expect.

We should send federal politicians to do it. Its not like they need to be in Canberra.

Isn't 'ABC' and 'news' an oxymoron 🙄

goes full blown Murdoch propaganda

I swear Murdoch is writing the headlines at the ABC these days.

Pay more and offer better conditions. Demand and supply, not artificially create conditions to exploit workers so business reap massive profits

More like the farmers don’t won’t to pay workers the correct wage

If the unemployed had to work they would find a job. This is why we don't want or need higher jobseeker payments. DUH!

Its capitalism, you need to pay more if you want people to leave their homes and families for short-term insecure work

Pay them more - simple supply and demand. Why is this never considered?

Who wouldn't want to go live on a farm and be paid almost nothing for 10 hour days of physical labour?

I see the ABC has now fully pledged itself to the Murdoch propaganda machine Now and forever more to bash the impoverished and blame the victims of injustice While never again questioning the systems that created both

fk that

How are they supposed to do farm work when they are not allowed to leave the city? Surely this should be seen as an essential service?

David Littleproud knows how shit awful fruitpicking is. The industry’s fucked up to the point where Australians have long since given it up for a bad joke. But this government has failed to regulate the industry

Farmers got drunk on slave labour from backpackers. Now they’re terrified they may have to pay real wages. People go work FIFO in the Pilbara cleaning toilets in mines. Pay real wages and people will pick fruit too

thisisnotjournalism

Bs.. About time lnpfail got off the couch and get their collective butts back to Parliament. sacktheMorrisongovernment

They could if they payed them more

I’m optimistic you could get people off couch if they can get out of lockdown Melb.

Simply must have more immigrants. Why not get the refugees and gangs into some honest work?

“Similarly, the 2017 National Temporary Migrant Work Survey found that one in every seven temporary migrant fruit and vegetable pickers were paid $5 an hour or less, and a third $10 an hour or less.” Leith van Onselen

“In 2016, the Fair Work Ombudsman completed an inquiry into Australia’s backpacker visa scheme, which found that “many backpackers are being subjected to underpayment or non-payment, unlawful deductions, sexual harassment, unsafe working conditions & other forms of exploitation”.

Picking fruit isn't the issue. Piss poor pay and conditions is the issue being ignored.

lying greedy farmers only wanting desperate easily bullied workers. Long hrs low pay poor safety records, any complaints they get sacked.

If we don't we be paying higher fruit and vegetables prices and we have plenty doing nothing right now something ScottMorrisonMP JoshFrydenberg D_LittleproudMP has to look Cut to jobseeker covid19australia auspol farming

Pay them well and they will come.

Why doesn’t the NFF lobby to extend the visas of backpackers from all countries ? What they need is work to survive and farmers need their labour ? Most dont want to go home !

Can't exploit foreigners any more, then complain that 'locals' who live hundreds of km away won't do short term casual seasonal work for low pay. Nice

So lift the pay rates. Make the jobs desirable financially to Australian Citizens ...... not just backpackers who are looking for any gig and don’t mind being taken advantage of!

Even before the pandemic there were to many ppl and not enough jobs in the cities. Once the pandemic hit I moved regional to take advantage of this seasonal work. Less rent & work. It is strange that some will travel to a different ctry for work yet Aussies wont travel within Aus

Or...inflexible, bad conditions, only really open to exploited labour

This is a clickbait title forwarding rhe 'dole bludger' narrative when the issue is geography, border closures, and lack of foreign travellers. Do better! ABC should be above clickbait journalism.

'Even when our social security payment for the dole was $550 a fortnight, we couldn't get people off the couch to go and pick fruit,' Mr Littleproud said. Bullshit. Why is the ABC a Murdoch press subsidiary now ? 🤬

The only time some people get off the couch is to go to the gym, where they spend the time gossiping, and talking or texting on their phones.

Farmers want nothing to do with Aus workers because they would actually have to pay REAL wages, tax, superannuation and provide REAL accommodation. None of which they pay for their cheap cash labour force from overseas 😡

I've done farm work, fruit packing. The work is steady for only certain times, the rest of the time you have to rely on centrelink. So many farms are absolutely awful employers. So many were happy to take backpackers, because they could get away with poor treatment & underpay.

Getting off the couch isn’t the issue .... the problem is do they have the means to up and relocate 100s of kms away, find accommodation etc. to work for a very low wage.

Bullshit

Of course not hahahaha!

Farm pay rates are terrible. If they want workers then pay better rates. It’s hard physical work.

Pay rise would probably go a long way

Would love to see our politicians get off the couch and head back to Canberra during this crisis at some stage.

This is why automation will soon take the place of farm hands. The farm hands will be around but at a much smaller rate than it is now.

So a deregulated labour market is good up until it isn't.

This is just untrue. Wjy demonize thr young ,trying to paint them all with the same brush? Maybe a small percentage are not interested in worki, but the vast majority are desperate for work. and others keep trying to perpetuate this myth and sell it as a fact. Do better

Buss folk in and out from near and far to makeshift camps with kitchens, laundries & ablutions, you get nothing for nothing in life, sooner folk learn this immutable maxim the more useful & stronger they become.

Not for a dollar a day you won’t!

Liitleproud is a little 💩

OK this is an untruth they go through labor hire forms who only hired overseas workers...in most instances won't hire Australians workers, stop promoting Murdoch propaganda. Maybe 4 corners needs to do a episodes on this industry and south Pacific Island workers ripped off.

Absolutely - some from ABC should do this

Without overseas migrants who do farm work for their second holiday working visas, farmers will struggle! Suggestion... go through the list of jobseekers, use a criteria for selection and make them a job offer they can’t refuse. A job is a job, even if it is a seasonal one.

Why would you lead with this quote? It's dole bludging crap. The first sentence in your article is 'The Federal Government says short-term farm work is often not practical for unemployed Australians'. Shame ABC for this clickbait bullshit.

It’s really hard work.
