NASA has sent a car-sized rover called Perseverance to Mars on a mission to hunt for signs of life and habitable conditions.

Perseverance was launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida tucked inside a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket for a journey that will take seven months, due to land on February 18, 2021. The rover is expected to land in Jezero Crater and comes equipped with a helicopter named Ingenuity.

’s mission is among a series of launches this July, including from the United Arab Emirates and China, which have taken advantage of a rare planetary alignment between Earth and Mars that allows travel with less power. Image: /Kim Shiflett
