Halifax resident Kim Taylor and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association filed a claim in Newfoundland and Labrador's Supreme Court in May, claiming the restrictions violate the charter and fall outside provincial jurisdiction.
The provincial government passed legislation banning anyone but permanent residents and asymptomatic workers in key sectors from entering the province.Taylor was denied the opportunity to travel to Newfoundland after her mother died suddenly. The association says it is also challenging changes to the province's Public Health Protection and Promotion Act which allows police officers to detain and remove individuals to "points of entry" to the province, and authorizes increased search powers.Taylor has said she was denied her request for an exemption to be allowed to visit her home province following her mother's death, despite including a plan to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.
While her case was later reconsidered and she was granted an exemption by provincial officials, Taylor said the decision came too late. This report by The Canadian Press was first published August 4, 2020
Is Canada a bunch of independent city-states, or is it a country?
Good to see someone is challenging this. Provinces cannot do this.
Good! It’s ridiculous.

The right to life trumps the right to travel!
Hopefully the ppl of NL win, speaking with several relatives there, they want safety over profits.
The idea you're going to prevent the virus from infecting everyone is silly. lockdowns and travel bans are the politicians attempts to avoid blame and criticisms. Not the result of good policy.
all i can say if the Prov gov wins this case as is There is NO freedom in canada and canadians have about as much rights as the Chinese in china
About time
Doesn't this woman know that the first and largest covid19 outbreak in Newfoundland was the result of a funeral gathering? She should be ashamed of herself for backing a frivolous court challenge
The travel ban likely kept the cases low in NL and saved people’s lives. I’m sorry for her loss, but it doesn’t give her the right to endanger other people. I hope the case is dismissed.
Further, Quebec, NS, NB and PEI also have/had restrictions on outsiders. I truly hope she loses. No province should have to suffer for the foolhardy actions of another. Yes, Quebec, I am looking at you.
People also have the right to health and safety. Permitting other Canadians entry for non-essential purposes puts that at risk. With a rural and dispersed population, NL doesn’t bit have the medical facilities to deal with a large outbreak delivered unto us by travellers.
