First-wave virus variants ‘disappeared’ during ‘effective’ first lockdown, research finds

First-wave variant

The study found that none of the common types of virus detected in the first wave re-emerged in the second with the exception of a single case of a first-wave variant found on December 21st. Sequencing Consortium, which sequences virus samples and maps the evolution of the virus in the State., UCD professor of microbial diseases and an infectious diseases consultant at St Vincent’s, said the research shows the “very clear role” international travel plays in seeding a country with a new wave of infections and variants of the disease.

“Not to act on data like this – and not to learn from our mistakes as we [plan to] come out of a really tough lockdown – would be really unfortunate and really bad,” Prof Mallon added.

So stop it...

No shit! 😮

(Duh) Virus doesn't travel, people do. When we eliminated the first strain last summer, ALL outbreaks since are a consequence of imported cases.

LeoVaradkar

Why was that study required. It’s obvious

Ah yes but let's leave the airports open see how many variants we can entice here

devisridhar There was no travel into Ireland without quarantines last summer. Shows how little you bother about the realism in completely stopping travel, there will always be movement through freight or critical imports. Pathetic.

What this does not address is the open border with Northern Ireland and the easy access to the Republic via NI, who also were not requiring restrictions or quarantine at the time. B117 would have gotten in anyway. We now at least have an aligned ( if not perfect) approach.

This is not journalism, this is a commercial promoting the longer lockdown and imprisonment at airport.

My guess: many Irish work another countries but go home for Christmas. Evidence? The price and availability of flights in mid/late December.

devisridhar But you know as well as I do, when infections drop very low in summer and vaccines have an effect, it will be business as usual with everyone flocking abroad. They will then bring in a variant that dodges the vaccines and we'll be back to where we were by next winter.

devisridhar The virus only moves via travel

You. Won't. Eliminate. New. Stains. Vaccines won't eliminate covid cases but will reduce the effects making it equivalent to a minor flu.

Over testing and seasonality were the 'second wave', which was just normal winter resurgence of an endemic virus, happens every year like clockwork, called flu season.

The government allowed 84,000 people in from the UK over the Christmas and are now wondering why 90% of cases are the UK variant. They are allowing people in from Brazil and next month they'll be wondering why most our cases are the Brazilian strain! You can't make this up!

devisridhar Talk about stating the obvious, you need a study for that.

devisridhar No shit!

devisridhar No shit Sherlock !

devisridhar First wave: skiers in the Alps Second wave: sunseekers in the Med Let's hope unmanaged returnees don't also cause vaccine-resistant strains to take hold now

devisridhar Travellers carrying Contagious Covid-19 from A to B to C.... to Y to Z.

Now there is a surprise 🙄. But would they listen? For once I agreed with Pritti Patel. Now where is that soap to wash out my mouth?😂

Too late now when the people of this island begged the government to shut ports. Money was more important than life to them

Everyone should read this book. It's about experts that are consistently wrong about everything and still have a job.

It has taken a year to figure this out when the dogs in the street could have told you that last March

Covid-19: Scally says ‘amazing amount of travel’ still happening as hospital cases fallSustained rise in Covid cases could endanger plans to reopen construction People are pissed off they've been kept lockdown for year now. Wait till the weather picks up a bit as is forecast for St. Patricks day people confined to their 5k parks in everyones locality will be swamped with people. Who does he think he is trying to close the borders of this country? Meanwhile where his job lies, they’ll have travel corridors this summer. Has he been questioned on ISAG tactics to humiliate and isolate people? Scare people into submission of zero Covid tripe? No data to support his assertions and a proven track record by ISAG (of which Scally is a member) of engaging in mind fear mongering mind games. No credibility.

Covid-19: Advice on working from home, travel to remain until June – NphetCovid-19: Advice on working from home, international travel to remain until June – Nphet And June will become September and they’ll still laugh at the businesses they’ve ruined..then lockdown for Christmas to save the HSE because lack of investment and then it’ll be March..2 years after the original 2 weeks and still no plan only lockdown..it’ll never end..stand up. And so the unelected dictate to the government and the public how to ‘live’ our lives. We deserve better from our government as a nation, but we cannot and should not take continuous lockdown much longer as people’s nerves and mental health is at breaking point. No just no.
