Federal regulators are investigating what caused a catastrophic engine failure on a United Airlines plane that rained debris on Denver suburbs as the aircraft made an emergency landing. Authorities said nobody aboard or on the ground was hurt. (Fixes link)

A United Airlines plane with smoke trailing from its right side is seen heading east towards Denver International Airport, Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021 in Broomfield, Colo . Debris from a United Airlines plane fell onto Denver suburbs during an emergency landing Saturday, with one very large piece that appears to be part of the engine narrowly missing a home.

“When it initially happened, I thought we were done. I thought we were going down,” said Delucia, who stuffed his wallet in his pocket so he could be easily identified if the plane did go down. “The pilot did an amazing job. It was pretty unnerving.” United said in a separate statement that most passengers on United Flight 328 were rebooked on a new flight to Hawaii, but some chose to stay in a hotel overnight instead.

He estimated the circular engine cowling at 15 feet in diameter. Fine pieces of the fiberglass insulation used in the airplane engine fell from the sky “like ash” for about 10 minutes, he said, and several large chunks of insulation landed in his backyard. “That unbalanced disk has a lot of force in it, and it’s spinning at several thousand rotations per minute ... and when you have that much centrifugal force, it has to go somewhere,” he said in a phone interview.

_Travel I flew Southwest Air Denver to Cali. Many unmasked people. Scary. Asked flight attendent to tell guy xcross from me to mask up. Cranky flight attendent Pete. Starting verbally attacking me. He called the police to meet me in Burbank! Harrassment on SouthwestAir

_Travel gary_kelly SouthwestAir isn’t following Covid Compliance, on their planes. I was scared to death of getting covid on that flight. Man wasn’t wearing mask. Flight attendant, Pete, refused to tell him to put it on Denver to Burbank. DONT FLY SOUTHWEST - TOO DANGEROUS priceline

Gives me goosebumps

United pilot did great. United corporate not so good. They recently changed pet travel policy to stricter than CDC requirements thus seriously impacting rescues in rabies free countries. Re-think it United. RabiesFreeCountries UnitedForPups PotcakePlace

I am glad it was not catastrophic! Scary, yes. But everybody in that plane are alive.

Lucky

Gives a whole new meaning to plain poop! What goes up must come down...

Aren't most of our airliners running on flex seal and gorilla tape.

I hope it takes 20 years with no answers because those quick and thorough investigations just create problems for 'shareholders'.

I’m Tanny - I live in Lagos at the moment. There is a human rights abuse that’s happening in Lagos Nigeria. I’ve lost properties and my job, I can barely eat and add weight which is part of my goals as a social media worker. please HELP cnn channelstv -take note andstuff

Wow, great!

Glad everyone is okay!

It’s always the last tiny screw you forget to tighten up. If I had a jet engine for every time...

Call on Jesus! Repent spend eternity in heaven

It's stories like this that actually make me feel better about flying (I have a mini fear). A plane's engine blew up and the plane was still able to land? Heck yes!

Thank you diversity!

Hey - you're usually pretty good about no sensationalism, but this story is poorly written. 'As the airplane began to lose altitude...' - not going to happen in a commercial airliner below cruise altitude. You're better than this.

No catastrophic is people would die.

The engine went KABOOM, then KAPUT, and SshhhoooRRRHHHHH. The plane landed and then clapping began. I tell no lies. 🌬☄️✈️

I really hope these airline companies are not cutting corners in their maintenance & security standards as a result of the economy. I hope they investigate this well & release the full details of what happened. It’s hard to trust many of these companies including Boeing anymore.

It was NOT a catastrophic engine failure. It was an uncontained engine failure. A catastrophic engine failure results in loss of aircraft and life.

Rest assured that whatever fell off that Boeing 777 hit the engine ripping the entire shroud off the Rolls Royce, P&W, or GE Engine.
