Kakadu is supposed to be a jewel in Australia's tourism crown, yet our biggest national park is falling into disrepair amid accusations of mismanagement and neglect. \n\n

Each year, parts of Kakadu are closed because of extreme heat, and then the wet season rains make river crossings and dirt roads impassable.

The popular Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Yellow Water was closed for refurbishment for a year. Veteran tour operator Sab Lord says visitors have been disappointed at how little they can see in the park. The land is managed together by Kakadu's traditional owners and the federal government agency Parks Australia. But their relationship has been fractured, and traditional owners say joint management is in dire shape.

In the letter, the rangers said that due to staff cuts there were no rangers available to fight a 2019 fire that caused more than $1 million in damages to houses and equipment.

'Park falls into disrepair'. From... lack of FUNDING, perhaps? It's a rock, let paying tourists get over it 🤣🤣🤣

Yes it's certainly a dilemma, apparently no maintenance leads to deterioration..... Unfortunately!

Seemed perfectly fine when I grew up there. That was quite a few years back. Was a problem with wild water buffalo among other things but national parks were dealing with the issues. Seemed to be doing a good job back then.

Well get off your lazy butts and and start doing whatever your ancestors did to maintain the environment. It's a fukn big national park so many of you needed.

Forward planning needs to take into account climate change. Traditional owners absolutely must be the ones to make decisions. Canberra can’t be trusted not to stuff it up.

When you have a Federal Government wholly focussed on Fossil Fuels rather than a sustainable business like tourism you have these sorts of issues. Money spent on National Parks would be good long term investment in Tourism and long term jobs.

It's not only Kakadu it's also Kosciuszko National Park with snow gums dying from beetles and wild horses and other ferals left unchecked.

It’s time to introduce a program where government takes over control of all Australian national parks. Enough of handing over new Toyota’s & buckets of money to “traditional owners?”. These area’s belong to all Australians and threats to shut out tourists are unacceptable!!!

Unsurprising at all. National parks in all states are mostly poorly managed, with roads and facilities not being well looked after. Return it to its traditional owners and let tourists enjoy the park and feel their love for the land rather than being government run.

The failure of this article to put any responsibility on the traditional owners for this situation is typical. It’s the same with the mismanagement of indigenous corporations. It is common for indigenous organisations to be mismanaged yet it is always the fault of govt.

If the “traditional “owners are claiming this then everything that they are using and that has been brought to the country due to settlement they SHOULD pay for. You can’t have it both ways.

The Western community of Australians simply don't care for Australian flora and fauna since they landed here despite not being welcome. What will they do once they are done with decimating my Fatherland as they have done to their shitholes in Europe they have fled?

This article is not well written. Kakadu has been exploited for tourism & mining, with fed money for repairs failing to surface, yet the author's focus is not on the failings to provide funding. The damage has been done, the repairs are owed.

Isn’t this on 4Corners tonight?

Liars.

Surely it is the responsibility of the traditional owners to maintain the site? Why are they trying to shift the blame?

Kakadu site closed by traditional owners over sacred site court caseThe Kadadu National Park area of Gunlom will be closed to the public just as the peak tourism season kicks off, after a meeting of traditional owners agrees that Parks Australia has 'a lack of respect' for their sacred sites. That means the government will not have to provide any funding in the future. Its a shame if the parties involved can't work it out. Sitting in the infinity pool was the single best thing I've done in the top end. We were next to OS tourists who were utterly blown away with the experience.
