SASKATOON -- Anxious travellers coming into Canada say they are waiting more than six hours trying to book a COVID-19 quarantine hotel through a government phone number, with many unable to get through at all.
“I have only slept three hours, approximately, but still haven't been able to have my booking done. On top of that, I have a 23-hour journey ahead with no idea of what will happen when I reach there.” “The Public Health Agency of Canada is aware that the hotel booking phone line is receiving a high volume of calls at the moment. We thank everyone for their patience,” Tammy Jarbeau, senior spokesperson for the agency, said in an email.
“It's not even possible to comply with these new restrictions as is because you cannot get through on the phone line,” he said, adding he’s been on the phone close to 10 hours in total.“They have told me if she doesn't book before she travels, she will be denied boarding and if by some way she can board her flight and she has not booked a hotel before arriving, she will be fined up to $3,000 per day under the Quarantine Act.
“I couldn’t sleep yesterday,” he told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview. “It’s very frustrating and it creates tension in your mind that you don’t know what’s going to happen.” Montrealer Raymond Riccoboni also agreed with the idea of some sort of online booking system because of the difficulty he’s experienced trying to book on the phone.

Yes, true and very frustrating. I took my day off and went unpaid for the hotel reservation. I spent 12 hours on the phone for hotel booking and the person taking bookings are not trained. They booked the room for $10000+ CAD. Then they corrected it with mistakes as well.

Some people HAVE to travel, and it's NOT vacationing. So many law suits are coming. Sucking up money to cover for the deficit of all fraudulent CERBs they gave out. You can't force travelers into detention centres and charge them $3000 for a 3 day stay, it's against the law!

After reading this article I have learned that way too many people have chosen to travel out of the country causing issues with long wait times. They chose 3 sympathetic cases to write about but 3 would not tie up the lines. As many have said people should have stayed home.

There’s room at the homeless hotel shelter the city of Toronto is opening. 300 luxury rooms, 3 meals + snacks! Free drugs, TV & wifi and recreational activities. All on what use to be a vibrant family tourist area the Esplanade.

Cbsa can't say what the exemptions are yet because it isn't finalized. The wait is hours, and they haven't even shown data yet to support this as necessary. People need travel for Essential reasons that aren't exempt. So stop grouping everyone as vacationers, it hurts people.
