‘Catalyst for change’: The $60m plan to save Oxford Street | michaelkoziol

Long before the lockout laws or COVID-19, Oxford Street was written off as a failure. A 2008 story in this publication quoted a report for the City of Sydney which said the precinct had “lost its mojo”, as well as a business lobby group which described the strip asFast forward 13 years and the booze-fuelled violence has pretty much dried up. But the vacant shops, dilapidated appearance and general malaise remain.

The DAs are still awaiting approval but contain plans for retail, food and drink, at least 1600 square metres of dedicated creative space managed in collaboration with the council, commercial offices and a 75-room hotel with rooftop pool at the eastern end of the strip near the Oxford Hotel. Mr Kospetas says if the $775,000 alterations are approved he wants to return the iconic LGBTQI restaurant Bellocio to street level .

Mr Brady said redeveloping Taylor Square might also help reactivate nearby blocks such as the stretch of Oxford Street between Flinders and South Dowling streets, opposite the Darlinghurst Courthouse and St Vincent’s. About half the shops are vacant in that zone, which once hosted a number of Balkan restaurants.

michaelkoziol Greedy corporate developer parasites ruin everything they get their hands on. If they are not killing koalas and raping forests they are smashing communities apart. Creeps.

michaelkoziol Why? It’s an old school building are we really that desperate to keep our short term history yet more than happy to destroy our real history when we want to dig up iron ore? I would say we over protect old building and under protect our history of our founding race
