Analysis: What would an Australia-Singapore travel bubble look like? | ChrisBarrett_

Hello from Singapore, where there’s a chance you may be joining me before too long if the much-talked-about travel bubble with Australia gets up and running in coming months. James Massola, my colleague and predecessor as south-east Asia correspondent,While there’s no start date for the bubble, it’s a major point of discussion here on the little red dot. There’s great enthusiasm for it among business, government officials and the 30,000-or-so Australians who live in the city state.

It is a strange experience right now, with airports eerily deserted and their shops closed indefinitely. But travelling to Singapore, which may be the first international destination many Australians visit in a long time, is already reasonably uncomplicated - once the Australian government allows you out of the country, that is.Between pre-flight coronavirus test results, health declarations and other documentation we turned up at Sydney Airport armed with more paperwork than a trial lawyer.

There is no quarantine per se for Australians here. You must simply take a cab to your accommodation and once inside it, stay there until your test result turns up negative. We had been advised that could take as long as 36 hours but email notification arrived after only six, and then we were out, the whole exercise carried out in typically functional Singapore style.

ChrisBarrett_ Been there once.not going back.

ChrisBarrett_ It would look like Australia’s vaccination rollout. A non event.

ChrisBarrett_ The reporter's experience does not mirror what will happen as the bubble assumes vaccination. It also doesn't cover the 'transit Singapore' option which is already permitted at Changi

ChrisBarrett_ Most expensive chilli crab holiday ever.
