The government is considering using Howard Springs to only quarantine Indian returned travellers, as a way to expedite getting people out of the country when the travel ban ends.

Australia has a ban on anyone entering the country if they have been in India in the previous 14 days

The federal government is now considering using the Howard Springs facility exclusively for people returning from IndiaImmigration Minister Alex Hawke conceded it would take "many months" to get all Australians stranded in India back. There are roughly 9,000 Australians in India who have told officials they want to return home, and about 900 are considered vulnerable.

The Howard Springs facility, outside of Darwin, has been used for those landing in the Northern Territory on repatriation flights."This Indian situation will take some [time]," he said. "Our hearts go out to India, we've sent one plane of supplies, we're going to be sending more, we're going to have to restart those repatriations, that will take some time.

Remote area is good.

Maybe the people that went to India to celebrate religious mass gatherings shouldn’t have done so Australians have been facing compromises for over a year now and these people have indicated a complete disregard for the community

Lots of good questions in these replies about lack of quarantine facilities. Our network strandedaussies has published info about logistics & the applicable auslaw. strandedAussies have proposed workable, evidence based solutions to govs ⬇️

What brilliant idea.

like the Area 51 in US don't we have the Area 69 in Australia? think I heard about it back in 1069 🤔

so..will then the other states (QLD, WA, VIC, SA) increase their travelcap of HQ to compensate for the shortfall of capacity taken away from strandedAussies outside of India? EstherRockett

'considering'

The clown had 12mths to figure that out

'Considering'. Great to see they are well on to it

Why not Christmas Island?

New citizens by conferral living over seas in COVID hot spots wanting to return need consider safety of all Australians ?

What breathtaking perception!

Well, this is certainly an improvement.

The entire Northern Territory has health adequate pre Covid infrastructure for what size population?

Best open Bladin Point then too because I cant see those from within Australia wanting to be quarantined there when there is another outbreak interstate, now there is no seperation. And an ADF field hospital because RDH won't handle it. Tacit acknowledgement camps work though.

Lol why. Why is India so special? So fucking weird.... Oooo wait... India has a new strain?.... But didn't the UK, USA AND SA have one too? boh

ALP/Greens coalition oversaw commissioning & operation of a national network of immigration detention centers. Some surely still exist? Could be reactivated and used short-term to house those repatriating during quarantine to keep everyone safe, including trained staff?

Why not Christmas Island?

They've had 14 months to do Something

...should have been using it ages ago,

The 'expedite' bit should have been in operation months ago! Didn't the PM promise to have all aussies wanting to return home, back by Xmas? Looks like he meant Xmas 2001.

Morrison dragged kicking and screaming into doing something again lol

Yes, do that instead. Omg, why dont they do this in the first place
