The temporary travel ban for India was not planned but was an “important one” as it allowed the government to raise the capacity of the Howard Springs quarantine facility in the Northern Territory, according to Liberal Senator Jane Hume.

“Just before that travel ban was put in place around 57 people were COVID positive in Howard Springs and resources were stretched to their limit, on top of that one in eight people on the last two flights from India were COVID positive.” Ms Hume said the travel ban was necessary to allow Australia time to collate sufficient medical resources before resuming repatriation.

SenatorHume Thought experiment: God forbid this crisis had eventuated in Israel and not India, Can we imagine Scott Morrison telling Israeli Australians they'd be fined and jailed if they attempted to come home? I. think. not.

SenatorHume Most of the Stranded Aussies in India would no doubt hold Indian passports as well ie Duel citizenship. They are home! Duel citizenship should be seen and treated for what it is no matter what country is involved. smh

SenatorHume Hume doesn't make much sense. Howard Springs expansion was announced in March. What progress has bn made in the last 2 mths? Even at its current cap of 850/fortnight, HS is underused, only taking ~1 repat flight/wk from the UK, 100-200 ppl per flight 👇

SenatorHume Wasn’t it Monday they said it wasn’t fit for purpose

SenatorHume Canadian environmentalist and broadcaster, Dr David Suzuki, spoke about why humans are destroying nature and why he holds little hope for the future of our society.

SenatorHume Why do we currently have no surge capacity? Either our HQ system is sufficient as Morrison keeps saying (it's clearly not) or we should have had this and other sites sorted long ago. We are more than a YEAR into this!

SenatorHume Morrison also said his re-election “was not planned” either?

SenatorHume Howard Springs is not the solution nor is India the only country. Pre-Flight supervised quarantine offshore, Full planes no cap. (Even a ship with quarantine on board in transit from ;ow risk countries) is. normanswan

SenatorHume That's a good place for quarantine
