Under-40s to be offered alternative jab to Oxford/AstraZeneca, JCVI announces - Jonathan Van-Tam leading news conference from Downing Street
Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical Officer for England, has said the UK is still on course to meet its target of offering a first jab to every adult by 31 July. "Please go ahead and have the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine" if you have already had the first, he says. The JCVI's Professor Wei Shin Lim says new data has been reviewed over the past few weeks, including the risks from"extremely rare adverse events" from vaccines, mathematical models and the speed of the roll-out.
The number of people in England in hospital with COVID-19 has dropped below 1,000 for the first time since September. Meanwhile, 24 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine are sitting in freezers waiting to be administered in the country. Sotrovimab, or VIR-7831, belongs to a class of medicines called monoclonal antibodies, which are synthetically manufactured copies of the human body's natural infection-fighting proteins.
The majority of deaths from COVID were in hospitals and care homes, while many deaths from other causes like cancer happened at home. Another reason for hesitancy was the confusing messaging due to there being several available vaccines.People also said they did not get the vaccine because they were worried about whether the shots contained animal products.09:43The northern European island nation has managed to avoid lockdowns during the pandemic.
It comes after lockdown measures were reinstated, as well as a rise in vaccinations, earlier this year. The policy came under criticism as people travelling from the south Asian nation faced fines and prosecution for arriving in Australia. Mr Flintham adds that he expects some of the more popular destinations to move on to the green list - with no quarantining requirement - in June.
And the country is set to approve the Moderna and AstraZeneca jabs in the next few weeks, according to local reports, boosting supplies by tens of millions. The first shows daily cases - but it is worth noting the first wave appears lower because fewer tests were being carried out at the point.
