SYDNEY—The United Nations body that oversees World Heritage sites has recommended that Australia’s Great Barrier Reef be classified as in danger, saying the country’s center-right government hasn’t done enough to protect the reef from the effects of climate change.
Environmental groups said placing the reef on the danger list would send a strong message to Australia’s government that it must move faster to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are a main contributor to“The more we raise awareness of the consequences of climate change and call out those who are failing to act, the better,” said Nicki Hutley, an economist at the nonprofit Climate Council.
“The reef is an icon internationally and we are here to fight for the reef,” she told reporters, adding that officials are also concerned a danger listing could hurt tourism. “Today’s decision doesn’t really come as a big surprise to me, it’s what we’ve been seeing and understanding now for quite some time now,” said Dean Miller, managing director of Great Barrier Reef Legacy, a nonprofit trying to preserve coral species by collecting them from the reef.
Meaning they haven’t mailed enuf money to the UN to funnel to China.
