The number of highway deaths in 2020 was the greatest in more than a decade even though cars and trucks drove fewer miles during the pandemic, and motorists are continuing to speed, tailgate and zigzag through traffic.
“Summer is an incredibly dangerous time. And it culminates with Labor Day, that last hurrah,” said Pam Shadel Fischer of the Governors Highway Safety Association. “There is continued concern about the rise in speeding and aggressive driving as we enter the heart of the vacation travel season and increased traffic volumes on the highways,” said Beau Duffy, spokesperson for New York State Police.With police distracted by civil disobedience and scaling back routine stops for safety, the lightly traveled roads quickly turned into the wild west in many places.
Fred Ashmore said New York was a “ghost town” as he sped away in May 2020, topping out at 159 mph and averaging about 108 mph over the 2,806-mile trip.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sounded the warning early in the pandemic about speeding and reckless driving.The agency expected fatalities to decline with fewer miles driven, similar to previous declines during economic downturns.

I know, what is it? Someone almost ran me off the road the other day. Also, people are driving 20-30 MPH over the speed limits. I never seen to many speed cameras flashing. These people need to get a grip. It's better to arrive late rather than the late.🙄

Not really shocking to know. Two weeks ago I saw a guy on a motorcycle in the fast lane on an interstate do a one mile long wheely at 80 mph. And that was a harbinger of what I would encounter before I finally got myself back home breathing heavily and thanking God.

In New York City, super cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis blazed down empty streets, with roaring engines disturbing residents trying to sleep. TO BAD Socialist's EXPENSIVE CARS CAN USE ROADWAYS..
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we have a whole bunch of new drivers who never learned how to drive in school. Their parents simply paid a driving school to teach them until they spent literally hours behind a wheel not weeks.

People still drive like they did when the roads were empty...but they aren't anymore. I've seen more flipped car accidents in the last year than in the previous decade and was out less than half as much anyway.

Let's lockdown all non essential vehicles and keep speed limits at 20mph for essential road use. Only way to save lives. If we save one itll be worth it and not detrimental to our way of life whatsoever.

I’m in the UK and people have lost the ability to drive. Not speeding, just really useless and incapable driving.. frightening as a motorcyclist, it may be people incapable of driving properly abandoning public transport and getting behind the wheel
