Relax on the archipelago
The northern and southern archipelagos of Gothenburg are the perfect place to unwind away from the bustling city. The car-free southern archipelago is closer to the city and has 5,000 permanent residents, yet the islands are still peaceful and a great place to experience Swedish coastal culture. There’s history too. Brännö island is mentioned in one of the 13th century Icelandic sagas.
Gothenburg is a green city not just because of its work with sustainability. Green spaces are plentiful. Slottsskogen Park is a vast park and zoo, home to elks, ponies, sheep and other Nordic animals in the heart of the city. Founded in 1842 by the Swedish King, The Garden Society is a wonderfully-preserved 19th century planned park. It’s easy to lose yourself here for hours wandering amongst the roses, lawns, ornamental gardens and exotic plants of the palm house. The timber houses and cobbled streets of Gothenburg’s Haga district hark back to a life long lost. But what was once a dense residential area for the workers of Gothenburg is now primarily known for its coffee shops and upscale restaurants.
