According to the International Civil Aviation Organization there are five official freedoms and four unofficial ones. The first four freedoms are pretty straightforward:

From Auckland, New Zealand passengers can travel to Bali on Emirates, Brisbane on China Airlines and Sydney on LATAM. Creating a fifth freedom route is complicated—it requires approval from at least three countries and depending on the route there may be stiff opposition from local carriers. For example, some U.S. airlines have strenuously objected to Emirates’ flights between the U.S. and Europe, claiming that Emirates doesn’t actually need to stop in Europe on its way to the U.S. and is taking advantage of government subsidies to cause harm to U.S. and European airlines.
