Austin and Lauren Fite hired a design firm that specializes in spas and hotels to create a ‘clean modern space’ inside their California apartmentIf you want your home to feel like a luxury spa, why not hire a decorator who has designed some of the world’s best?
Austin Fite, 74, a retired internist, and his wife, Lauren Fite, 67, a former physicians assistant, bought a 2,200-square-foot apartment overlooking the Santa Monica Pier in California for their retirement years. “I wanted a clean modern space, with lots of texture,” says Mrs. Fite, about her choice of Clodagh, a one-name designer who has a minimalist aesthetic. The couple, who is downsizing from a nearby house, spent $1 million on the renovation—about twice the original budget. The project took a year.
Irish-born Clodagh heads Clodagh Design in New York City. The firm has designed spas and hotels around the world including Miraval Berkshires and Six Senses Douro Valley in Portugal. The Fites became aware of Clodagh’s work when touring a model apartment in a building adjacent to the one they bought, and then contacted her.
She gutted the space and reworked the floor plan, turning the three-bedroom condominium into a two-bedroom with a media room and open living and dining space. The apartment has 2½ bathrooms. A neutral palette, including walls in textured gray metallic plaster and off-white linen, helps light-filled rooms flow seamlessly into one other. There are two terraces.
