Dermot and Dorothy Moynihan say they will travel via Poland to see baby boy called Luke

“We’re so excited, we can’t wait to see him and hold our little boy. We will worry about everything else after that.”

Mr Moynihan said they were lucky that the city of Lviv where their son was born is on the western side of Ukraine, close to the Polish border so that even if flights from Krackow are cancelled, they can travel on by train.The new parents are hoping that the paperwork can be completed quickly. Mr Moynihan thanked their legal representatives and the Department of Foreign Affairs who were working hard to turn around the required paperwork which includes birth certs and DNA tests.

Approximately 14 babies are due to be born in Ukraine in the period to May by way of surrogate mothers acting for Irish couples. Ukraine is the most popular destination for Irish heterosexual couples wanting to have a child by way of a surrogate mother. Canada is the most popular destination for same-sex couples.

It can cost up to €60,000 to have a child born by way of a surrogate mother in a private, regulated clinic in Ukraine.
