B.C. hotel operators react with jubilation to Ottawa’s plan to drop COVID testing at Canada’s border on April 1.

“There has been such a mixed message and confusion over whether or not our border was open, especially since a lot of competitors in other countries have been open for some time,” said Ingrid Jarrett, CEO of the B.C. Hotel Association.

“We really need them to say: ‘We’re open for business, we’re excited you’re coming, we really want you to come,’” she said. And the province said it would fund Destination B.C. over the next three years to “market B.C. as a destination of choice in a highly competitive international market” to attract conferences and business events.

The lifting of testing requirements at the border is “the kind of news we had been hoping for” for this season because it allows operators to start planning, recruiting staff, ordering supplies and “gearing up for a much busier tourism season.” B.C. tourism is reliant on airlines recovering but there is always the chance of a new restrictions if COVID spikes again.
