Australia will develop long-range missiles that can travel at least five times the speed of sound under a new agreement with the United States and Britain to build up its defences in the face of a rising China and belligerent Russia.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined his American and British counterparts Joe Biden and Boris Johnson in the early hours of Wednesday morning to announce the new deal to build hypersonic missiles. When asked about the deal on Wednesday , China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun warned against measures that could fuel a crisis like the Ukraine conflict in other parts of the world.“Anyone who does not want to see the Ukrainian crisis should refrain from doing things which may lead the other parts of the world into a crisis like this,” Mr Zhang said. “As the Chinese saying goes: if you do not like it, do not impose it against the others.
“We are pleased with the progress in our trilateral program for Australia to establish a conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability,” the leaders said. Initial steps are also underway to ensure Australia has a workforce with the necessary skills, training, and qualifications to build, operate, and sustain the nuclear submarines, according to sources from all three countries.
