Over the past week, 16% of tourists have cancelled their trips to Durban, which translates to a loss of about 30 000 visitors.

According to information presented to Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu by stakeholders in KwaZulu-Natal this week, this meant a direct spend loss of a projected R30 million, with a GDP loss of R74 million and 155 temporary job losses.

“The occupancy rate is estimated at 47%. As lead bookings have shortened as a result of travel uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we were expecting an improvement in bookings this week, closer to the long weekend, as trends have shown that the domestic market does tend to make late holiday bookings.” Sisulu said:

She said 10 B&Bs that are part of the tourism network had received cancellations in the Ugu District Municipality.
