Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong will visit Jakarta next week to reset a bilateral relationship they believe the Morrison government neglected.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong are wasting no time in meeting the neighbours.Mr Albanese announced the visit to the Labor caucus in Canberra on Tuesday, and it was confirmed by Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.in June last year, Senator Wong said Australia had neglected Indonesia.
“By contrast, neither [foreign minister] Marise Payne nor Scott Morrison has been to Indonesia since December 2019, despite making other high-profile overseas visits in that time.” Teuku Rezasyah, an international policy expert at Padjadjaran University in Bandung, noted that bilateral relations were at their best under a previous Labor administration, when Paul Keating was prime minister in the 1990s.
