Australian Tourism Industry Council chairman Evan Hall said he expected international tourism businesses to recover faster from September and October.Mr Hall said the sector faced a number of capacity restraints that were “deeply frustrating after two years on your knees”, such as labour shortages and long delays in visa approvals for travellers.
The ATIC chairman added that more money should be poured into Tourism Australia to attract working holidaymakers such as backpackers to alleviate the labour shortage.“We are in a highly competitive market. Backpackers are in demand across the world,” Mr Hall said. Mr O’Sullivan agreed with Mr Hall that Australia had to compete fiercely for working holidaymakers and backpackers to fill the gap, and said Labor should upgrade funding for Tourism Australia to help.
