CTVNews.ca asked Canadians to share their travel horror stories as cancelled flights, delays and lost luggage throw a wrench in Canadians' summer travel plans, due in part to staffing shortages at Canadian airports. Some report sleeping at airports and others say it took days to get to or from a destination.

Some report sleeping at airports due to cancellations and delays. One person, flying from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, said it took two cancelled flights and an extra day to get home, while his luggage — filled with 70 frozen lobsters — took two days to arrive.CTV News app sign-up: Breaking news alerts and top stories delivered right to you

"It had all of my valuables, medications, contact lenses, my son's retainers, my Invisalign, etc. Things you need and can't replace on vacation," she said. She described the room as not having enough seats for everyone, forcing some to sit on the floor, and one small washroom with no soap, toilet paper or paper towels. Klausmann says there were no cups for the water fountain.

They found a flight with another airline that cost nearly as much as the entire trip. They went through another lengthy check-in process, but eventually made it to New York. People sleep on a bench as they wait at Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport, in Montreal, June 29, 2022. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan RemiorzLori Veltkamp had planned a three-week trip to Greece with her two daughters. She bought her tickets in January and was scheduled to fly direct from Toronto to Athens in late June.

"We are three people with basically no clothes and have had to purchase new things. We are hopeful that we will receive our luggage soon but are feeling very defeated and discouraged by this entire experience," she said. After his flight from Prince George, B.C., to Toronto for July was cancelled, Harmolk Brar said he was given an option of cancelling the flight online for a refund."A cancellation penalty for flights that they have already cancelled," he said.

She chose to cancel and was told her refund would be less than half of what she originally paid. Boulter said she has tried unsuccessfully to reach someone from the airline by phone, an online contact form and social media.

Planned. The worst is yet to come

Trudeau’s plan! The Liberal reset!

Passports are for 10 years. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Today my daughter left from NYC and my wife from DTW to AMS. Both at the gate within 1/2 hr. I can show the receipt form the short-term parking structure. I am Canadian and DTW is closer. Air Canada should not be

Bahaha I see a blue, blue wave coming.

It's all Trudeau's fault. When will people understand that

By design.

say thanks to justin for this

For a system that worked terrific for decades and decades and suddenly has fallen apart over the last 2 years it's politics, it's a liberal party it's Trudeau.

And our politicians are on vacation till October. So diddly gets done

Mass layoffs and job losses because of Covid paranoia is the result. Did these companies think after all this time the former employees would return? Most likely they found better jobs or went back to school.

Exactly what Justin wants

Souring summer travel is the plan.

That’s the whole purpose of the whole gong show - to discourage people from travelling

This backlog has been an issue for weeks now. Why are people still trying to fly then whine about the delays and baggage issues. If you are just traveling for pleasure, stay local and support local tourism. Keep your $ in 🇨🇦. CTV should be promoting 🇨🇦 tourism

Try leaving your luggage at home. If you can't leave home without it, . . . stay home, doh.

plebs don't fly in wef great reset

My sons direct flight from Edm to Ott ended in TO. Line ups so long to rebook and wait time for flights taking days, he hopped on ViaRail and came home. His luggage arrived the next day.

All due to the Federal Liberals. Thanks Liberal voters.

Only in Canada. They have to sort out their the way they process people at customs. OmarAlghabra this is on you to fix! The customs room at TorontoPearson is absolutely congested with people. Thousands of people having to go through a repetitive process causing delays.

Thanks, trudeau

Time to shut down airports that ask for government bailouts when they are always making record amounts of money in their fiscal reports.

Boo flipping hoo. These 'defeated and discouraged' people could have chosen summer holiday options closer to home and avoided contributing to the problem.

And yet they are still giving Pearson their business. They are suckers for their own punishment.

Trudeau doesn’t want average Canadians to fly!! Only the rich vaccinated should be allowed in the air

They aren’t even being proactive about contacting customers and rebooking the flights. You are on your own.

This is 'living with covid', how does it seem to be going? We could never have covid zero, but the choice wasnt zero of infinite, it was zero - mitigated - mitigated less - mitigated less - mitigated less - mitigated less - mitigated less -covid infinity

They don't want you to fly. Period.

Under Trudeau, every sector under gov't control is a complete disaster. The incompetent goof appoints people more incompetent than himself. Liars: 'RCMP asked for the Emergency Act'. NO. 'The passengers are to blame for airport problems'. NO. TrudeauIsDestroyingCanada cdnpoli

What is happening is the result of the failure of the CAQ party to run the affairs of the country. A party that failed to reform education and health... . He succeeded in spreading racism among the members of society. Stop discrimination bill 96,21

What if instead of lockdowns/restrictions, this whole situation is on purpose for the same effect of people not going anywhere because they don't want the hassle of going anywhere?

Trudeau locked them down. Then he created fear and hysteria over Covid. Then he forced vaccination or be fired. Now they don’t want to work so they use Covid as an excuse to stay home, get paid and not work. Vote Liberal/NDP for more of the same idiotic policies.

Hire more staff I guess it wasn’t the vaccine passport

A hypocrite country that is falling apart and failed for decades

The vile comments I saw the last few years demonizing covid free people who were wanting and needed to work made me sad . You were lied to .

We need daily boosters for all airport employees! If they don't like it, fire them and replace them with blue-haired, gender fluid, triple masked, vaxxed to the max employees. 😂

But Its all good, as long as king Trudeau could travel the world, us peasants can suffer.

I wouldn't travel via plane right now for free. No way. I can wait and France will be there next year.

Imagine if we had a war here. The gov is going to get us all killed.

Oh dang, that's awful.

WestJet says it 'proactively' reduced its summer flight plans | CBC NewsWestJet says it will have fewer flights this summer compared to July 2019, in an effort to provide 'stable operations' as soaring travel demand in Canada outpaces airport staffing capabilities. This is pretty ridiculous..I am no scholar but I would suspect that we are comming up to the busiest travel season or 2... yet they continue to ignore the low-hanging fruit, the simplest mitigation of on-board/inflight masking to keep passengers/staff safe and operations running Well, no trips for me!
