Macau has locked down one of the city's most famous hotels, the Grand Lisboa, as COVID-19 infections spread rapidly in the world's biggest gambling hub.Hundreds of people have reportedly been told they can't leave one of the city's most luxurious hotelsAuthorities reported 146 new infections on Wednesday, taking the total to more than 1,000 cases since mid-June.Local media reported around 500 people were inside the hotel, with no-one allowed to exit or enter.

SJM Holdings said it was acting in strict accordance with the government and supported the authorities' pandemic control measures. But the city's casinos have been allowed to stay open in what the government says is an effort to ensure job security. Macau adheres to China's "zero-COVID" policy which aims to eradicate all outbreaks, at almost any price, running counter to a global trend of trying to co-exist with the virus.
