PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians are advised to defer any non-essential travel to Sri Lanka due to public unrest in the island nation.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement on Sunday said they are closely monitoring developments in Sri Lanka and that the High Commission in Colombo is in close contact with all registered Malaysians there to ensure their safety and provide consular assistance, if required.

"All Malaysians in Sri Lanka are advised to give utmost attention to their safety and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities," the statement read.
