On an average night in Los Angeles County, more than 60,000 people are homeless. And on an average night, there are more than 20,000 vacant hotel rooms. In 2024, residents will get to vote: Should those vacant rooms be offered to the unhoused?

Los Angeles On an average night in Los Angeles County, more than 60,000 people are homeless. At the same time, there are more than 20,000 vacant hotel rooms. In 2024, residents will get to vote: Should those rooms be offered to the unhoused?

"It's insane. It isn't going to solve the problem," says Stuart Waldman, president of the Valley Industry & Commerce Association, which represents hotels and other businesses across the north of the city. He fears housing the homeless in hotels will put people off visiting Los Angeles. "I wouldn't want my kids around people that I'm not sure about. I wouldn't want to be in an elevator with somebody who's clearly having a mental break," he says.

Bill death on arrival.

Should the hotel's be held responsible for the act of the covid and voluntary homelessness? I'm understanding voluntary caring aren't the hotels individually owned and I have to think about possibly conducting charities for land and erecting towers for homeless to rehabilitate.

They would be so happy to have a place to stay they probably wouldn't even come out of room. That's a rude way of thinking on your part. Heartless jerk. The don't care about hoity toity patrons. You small minded uncaring leach

How you going to go and dictate somebody business like that? Put them in Beverly Hills or modify shipping containers or something

Spoon feeding

How about we start prosecuting doctors willing to butcher children via gender reassignment surgery, taking the kids away from their parents for abuse, and put the child in therapy.

Well this sounds like a good idea

A Blue state.

Lmafao!!!

Many are on drugs not a good idea.

I’m going to California on vacation!! Not taking any luggage, just what’s on my back. 😉😋🤪👍🏼

thanks to all the LA voters!passing this proposal will mean the homeless can live better which stirs the warmth of the society!

crazy

They should offer

nothing to make staying at a hotel a good time like a bunch of mentally ill drug addicts staying there as well

That’s bull , just looked into booking a room in Texas and luckily I seen there homeless that live there. But yet they want to charge all crazy prices for people that want to stay at hotels. Agree something needs to be done but not at hotels that people like staying at.

I’ll take worst idea ever for $1000 Alex!

So what homeless are they talking about? The working homeless, homeless families or the junkies and mentally ill?

YES CALIFORNIA DO THE RIGHT THING MAY LEAD TO GREAT JOBS WITH THE HOTELS AND ON SITE EDUCATION

Another reason to never visit California again.

Not even close to constitutional and shouldn't even have been on the ballot.

No

That would qualify as a 'temporary taking' under the 5th Amendment, would it not?

Soon will say whether your home will have to offer empty rooms to homeless people

This is insane. Just tax the rich and invest in creating jobs and homes for homeless people.

Americans I don’t believe that hotels should have to bring in homeless people to fill up their room. I know the America writes off billions of dollars for billionaires on loans. Let’s call on those loans and build shelters for those who are disabled and unable to work. Awake

Who is getting this ridiculous idea

I can see all the bed 🛌 bugs 🐜

That costs to much. Hotels and motels could cost 200 a night!. We cant afford it in that way

A and B coming together to decide what C should do for D. I wonder if anyone will vote for such a measure if empty rooms in private houses were also part of the equation.

Perhaps housing the job able-bodied marketable ones in this situation should be considered. * the employed could contribute towards partial rent, expenses, etc. * those not mentally incapacited, or handicapped by drugs, or alcohol could be guided towards training, or volunteering

cnn there a bit rough but most of them are in great shape.

Why ruin good hotels?

Can't wait to wake up in these hotels to the sweet smell of crack and meth smoke. A few nodding off from their morning shor of fentanyl. Equity!

Let’s see how that turns out 😂😂😂😂 Perfect opportunity for vacation rentals.

Talk about self-destruction.

Ok I need a room for a the night don’t want to pay can I go in and claim I homeless?

Wow 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lol

And they wonder why businesses are leaving along with population.

I see another tax scheme coming up

I’m gonna identify as homeless and live there.

More homeless shelters needed for sure. But hotels having to offer rooms? Deep cleaning would be required to keep those rooms usable for other patrons. A step too far.

To answer seriously & I’m not Christian, is it true that there are so many cold-hearted people who see homeless people as dirty, deviant drug addicts? Are there really so many people selfishly acclimatised to comfort that they would not extend a helping hand to destitute people?

That proposal are crazy. I am a Democrat. Vote no. That bad for the hotel business

What if they decide to squat?

Well if you are going to be a sanctuary city...

This is a terrible plan

California is literally making it their goal to drive all business from their state.

That's about to be some nastyyy rooms lmao. Gonna have urine all over the floor and holes in the walls 😂

Since when do voters get to decide what private companies do with their property? This has to be illegal. Will California voters then have a say in all other businesses?

Democrats fixing problems at the expense of everyone else. Sounds about right

The people of LA should let them into their homes if they have a spare room help someone out.

Hotels full of homeless and illegal aliens.

I love watching tales of California, by season five we will be entering thunderdome and after soylent green

I’m all for ideas on finding temp housing for certain people but this is just dumb.

Voters should never be deciding an issue like this. Utter lunacy. And such a policy, if implemented, would do nothing to meaningfully address either the homelessness problem or its root causes.

Also those houses with spare rooms

I know it’s a essentially a Soviet republic, but has California no sense of private property at all? Yikes.

How about Mosques ? I hear that Muslims are the most warming people ? And about proposal, MUST be 5 stars hotels, do not let the homeless people live in some shabby, trashy place ! Who agree ?

What about churches?

This will be interesting.

i am sure socialism will sort out that problem.

Re-open mental health facilities, treat ppl who need the help..this was the biggest mistake of many governments around the world.. most, not all I admit, who are on the streets have some form of untreated mental health issue, that's the place to start!!

HeckNO! What a stupendous idea! White Hpuse lawn could accommodate Tent City or Yosemite National Park

Absolutely not. Durning COVID one of my hotels was contracted by my municipality and turned into a shelter. The hotel was destroyed. We ended up closing the hotel to do a total renovation that cost over $3 million dollars. I will never do that again.

The state really is encouraging helping others, y’all are bashful. The government helps us provide for our families. What makes homeless people any different. Be humble to keep your blessing up. Free country, with mouth fed ignorants. Y’all sad.

When mental health facilities closed where'd you think alot of those pts would end up?, in jail or on the streets ..we need to look at the mental health crisis that currently exists and actually address it. Same thing happened in Oz..all to SAVE PUBLIC MONEY!! well it failed..

Your never guaranteed tomorrow which is why eternity should be your main priority. Jesus Christ is the way.

So all those that vote yes should hose a homeless in any vacant room or couch they are not using in a single night- Come on folks get a grip- Your just asking to lose businesses and tourism and therefore your entire city will dry up and become a wasteland as no more taxes etc

I guess that will be the end of the tourism industry in LA. People, you keep voting for Dems, where do you think the money is going to come from, to keep the zoo that we will be living in afloat? These guys just don’t respect anything and will do anything for a vote.

Why don’t film studios hire them as stand-ins?

Better yet let's require AirBnB do the same.

Possibly with some major rules. Families with kids should be the first priority. And if anyone screws up, starts problems with other guests,, trashes the room, etc, they are done. No 2nd chances.

This might work!,..hotels would be paid “market value”…sooo,..I need investors to help me build a 10,000 bed, barely cardboard “chicken coop”,.with disposable rooms, basically only for the homeless,..we can make bank !! Capitalism at its best!..oh I mean “humanity at it’s best”

1/3 Walking up to my hotel in downtown LA, I meet a lot of homeless people. Some of them got into my face, almost in a confrontational manner. It was quite intimidating, I must say With that said: the solution cannot be that simple, that is to house them in vacant hotel rooms

That'll go great.

No.

Hard ‘no’.

Yuck! I’m pretty sure these Democrats won’t be holding their meeting in Los Angeles

I hear Brian Stelters office is open, CNN should house the homeless there, lets vote on it! Time for CNN to become a use of some sort.

So basically. Don’t travel and stay in California then. Got it

There’s an invention called homeless shelters that would work well if there were enough of them. Just putting it out there.

I won’t be booking a room in LA. So if LA voters approve this, is that the desired outcome? That hotels go out of business?

NO

Isn’t that a financial dictatorship? To force Businesses to take in homeless people isn’t that the government’s job to create places and rehabilitation back into society.?

Yes, on conditions.

Yes

I want to hope even Angelenos know better than to vote for that, but I’m not optimistic. The train wreck continues…

so now you want the homeless to destroy are streets and private businesses... next they will try and get people with vacant rooms in there houses to have to take in homeless people. I bet the hots are against this

In government hotels only

Effen gross.

Looks like I ain't coming back to LA

The drug free ones only...

I wonder why the 🇺🇸 govt is sending billions of money to ukraine to fight a war and yet it has millions of its citizens living a hell life. That's not only in the LA where people are homeless even in the other states of the USA people are suffering

Recipe for disaster

Yes

Yes

Homeless people are increasing at a very rapid rate across many parts of the world &USA. It sometimes gives a surprising factor, that why the homeless people are in a very poor state of affairs. In fact people suffer from mental illness of various due to current economic issues.

How about, empty bedrooms at Liberal home’s? Why is that never the option? I find it funny, Liberals always want to give away someone else’s stuff, just never their own. Find me one with a homeless encampment in their yard! But they always want one in your yard.

Sure, let's start with all thw high-end hotels in Beverly Hills. The Marriott resorts and Hilton hotels.

Por onde anda a turma que assinou a tal 'carta pela democracia'?

No. I will never stay in a hotel that houses human debris.
