Toronto’s Pearson Airport has quietly launched a new partnership with local and federal health agencies to monitor the sewage at Canada’s largest air terminal in a bid to detect potentially deadly new variants as they enter the country. The testing program is a first-of-its-kind move for a Canadian airport, a spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority told the Star.
Dwayne MacIntosh, director of corporate safety and security at Pearson, told the Star in a recent interview the airport wastewater testing is “a very easy mechanism to test for COVID-19,” with the added benefits of being both affordable and non-invasive to travellers. The airport authority has opposed on-site testing of passengers, which it has claimed contributed to wait times for arrivals.
In a statement to the Star this week, Bloore said his organization welcomes the pilot program. “We hope collaborations such as this will bring us closer to that and help to remove remaining obstacles to travel,” he wrote. Samples, Maddison said, are collected from three locations at the airport and 24 other locations across Ontario. “This pilot project will also help evaluate the potential role of wastewater surveillance in increasing preparedness for future pandemics,” Maddison added.
