The wood-burning stove in the Morning Room at Chillingham Manor gives a cosy welcome on a chilly autumn day. Head to the North Wessex Downs for fresh autumn walks, and base yourselves at the Crown and Anchor, in the photogenic village of Ham. Once an alehouse for farm workers, this stylish pub with rooms has a new lease of life with five bedrooms in the pub, and three in a rustic cottage a two-minute walk across the village green, each taking its name from a local farm. Public areas have oak panelling and flagstone floors, and there is a wood-burning stove in the restaurant.
