Built atop San Diego’s old execution grounds, the Whaley House in Old Town was once home to an unlucky family of five. Despite being aware of the land’s dark history, entrepreneur Thomasto proceed with the construction of his family’s home in 1857, and even placed a large arch in the parlor room of the home to mark the exact spot where former Yankee thief Jim Robinson experienced a drawn out and grueling execution.
The Whaley family experienced a total of five deaths during their time living in the home, including several children and Thomas’ wife, Anna. The home has been said to be haunted by their spirits ever since. The home was deemed “the most haunted house in America” by Life magazine. Today, the home is open to the public for self-guided daytime tours or haunted night tours.
