At least 70 000 Indigenous Maasai residents could be relocated if a court rules in the Tanzanian government's favour.
The ruling, which was initially set to be handed down in June, was postponed after violent clashes between the police and locals in Loliondo, which resulted in the death of a police officer. Sources close to the case claim that, since the June clashes, the government has been segregating the Maasai people in an attempt to frustrate them.
Donald Deya, the chief executive officer of the Pan African Lawyers Union , who is leading the team of local and regional lawyers representing the Maasai people, backed up these claims."The government appears to have a carefully thought-out and long-term strategy of totally evicting the Maasai from most if not all of the Ngorongoro District, all three Divisions of Loliondo, Sale, and Ngorongoro.
Deya added that massive overt and covert intimidation, misuse of the police, military and judicial process, and outright violence, had taken a toll.
