Amtrak's Acela is the fastest passenger train in the Western Hemisphere, but tickets can be pricey.
Amtrak fares can vary dramatically in the Northeast, home of the most heavily used stretch of track in the railroad's nationwide network, which also includes stops in Canada. But tickets are often more expensive than plane tickets, despite flight times being much shorter than the typical train ride. Transportation researchers say Amtrak's fares in the Northeast are higher than those for comparable systems.Ridership numbers and finances were strengthening before the coronavirus pandemic. A former executive said that in early 2020 the company was on its way to its first profitable year in its history. The pandemic tanked ridership and dashed those hopes.
But now Amtrak has reasons to be bullish about its future. In November 2021 the federal government allotted Amtrak $66 billion to upgrade equipment and repair and expand its network. Amtrak wants to increase ridership by 20 million annually, and expand into areas around the country with fast-growing populations but little passenger rail service. States such as Texas, Florida and Arizona are all prime candidates.
Hahahaha
Who cares?
Privatize it like we did Ma Bell into Baby bells. Why should Taxpayers pay for people not riding ?
Public Transportation is often subsidized by governments throughout the world.
Airline corporates just lower reported incomes to pay less tax and get subsidies from govt. their directors in the management board are high paid
Never fear, Amtrak Joe & Pothole Pete are on the job!
making money is not the purpose of transportation infrastructure. the interstate highway system doesn't make money either
SIMPLE EXPLANATION- GUBBERMENT OPERATED = 🤡🌎 it’s just tax payer 💰money lost 🤷♂️
That's because it has to slow down in too many spots between Boston and New York.
Deutsche Bahn is reportedly profitable, which I find shocking. However, they have extremely high ridership versus US I believe.
Public transport is not about making money. Heavily subsidised worldwide.
Why would the goal be to make money? Ludicrous framing.
This is what happens when the government takes control of anything ! Private sector will always fair better, failure is not an option like our government has
But Joe Biden rode on it all the time.
It’s because of climate change
And some think a federal ran heath care system is a good thing.
look at how much money subsidizes airlines ATC, airport construction, govt military contracts to mfrs, oligopoly then Amtrack must share w freight cos that have priority bottom line: commercial lobby trumps public transport all over
making money is not the purpose of transportation infrastructure. the interstate highway system doesn't make money either
Hiked gas prices, means/need/demand for alternative travel options & accessibility
Does it have anything to do with unions?
we have the worst rail possible: price, speed, performance, quality of cars… you name it is not there. When we keep on talking about the environment and tax us on everything but have zero quality rail!
have to pay the news to keep all of the derailments off the feeds grangergloryhole
Thanks Joe Biden
maybe we can get Norfolk Southern to operate more passenger trains I heard they're really good at making profits
Amtrak is just so badly run. That's always been its problem. It should be able to be fine if they actually put competent people at the helm. Amtrak rail travel
Too many low life’s and criminals on the train.
Pricey? Might as well drive or fly then.
Whole system would have to be built out, very inefficient NY to Boston, and NY to Washington Corridors are the only ones that make money.
Private rail companies have never turned a profit on passenger rail transport. Please do so!
The post office would like a word
lavineltcins Privatized rail systems will likely be too costly for the average consumer. I don't know the answer but I can promise privatization isn't it.
Joe POTUS JoeBiden KJP46 ?
State sponsored enterprises tend to be inefficient
The problem is most Amtrak riders were watching East Palestine news reports on their phones.
Well, Amtrak is a government corporation. So, it's not surprising that they've never made money.
Fix ur videos
Amtrak can't break even because it was never truly invested in
Is the goal of a passenger railroad monopoly to make money ?
Amtrak is not supposed to make money.
highways have never made money either
Nope
oh god kiss of death, private companies
Our roads rarely make money — and it is more common than not for government services to not make money. That’s the nature of government.
What happens when government employees run what is supposed to be a business. Spend at a rate that exceeds income. stupidity
The Post Office has been delivering mail since 1775 and has never returned a quarterly dividend to stockholders. Watch the video: Fartnoises.mpg
Holy fuck it's not supposed to make money!
Tesla also loses money on the cars it sells. Make sure to mention that in every article about “genius” Elon Musk

jpr007 Since when government owned businesses should make money?
The government is running something inefficiently? Couldn’t be!
Why does the American government abandon necessary services to its citizens and SELL the entities to 'private' companies then the citizens become victims of the 'private' companies because the services are needed?
Someone please end Amtrak and call the Japanese .. they have it nailed down
Trains are too slow
Another example of Government efficiency over that of the private sector.
No form of transportation makes money; airlines only make money because the government pays for air traffic control and to build airports. Amtrak doesn’t exist to make a profit, it exists to provide transportation and facilitate economic growth and development.
I’ve done it before I’ll do it again
Exactly what the OP said. It's not about making money but about service to the public.
The reason Amtrak (and NJ TRANSIT) exist in the first place is that despite HUGE government subsidies the commercial passenger railroads never made any profits, either. Amtrak and NJT were created with the understanding that it was a public service, not a for-profit entterprise.
Cars are freedom. Trains are control. Even the bluest Americans do not want to be controlled. Americans do not want to ride trains.
