The continuing travel drama is for many a tale of lost suitcases, some happily reclaimed while others are marooned across the country

A controlled chaos settled in at the San Diego International Airport Wednesday, where Terminal 1 was again busy with travelers left stranded by craters in Southwest Airlines’ flight schedule.“We’re in!” one man shouted after an announcement was made for a flight to Kansas City. He and his wife gathered two small children and headed toward the ticket counter with three large suitcases. In a normal situation, they would have checked in the bags already. This was not normal. This was what U.S.

Some of the bags belonged to travelers who had not yet arrived in San Diego because they were stranded elsewhere. Some belonged to travelers who got here days ago, before their belongings did, and hadn’t been back yet to claim them.In hers, Alexa Moncada had a $400 espresso machine she had planned to give her parents on Christmas Day. She checked the bag at the airport in Denver on Dec. 21 for a flight home to San Diego.

She went to the airport here: No bag. She went back Saturday and was told it was in Las Vegas. Come back Tuesday, they said. She did, and still nothing. Scott LaRocco, a senior terminal operations coordinator at the airport, said problems associated with the schedule breakdown have been manageable for the janitors, concessionaires, information workers and others in Terminal 1.

It also helped that many of the people traveling to San Diego for the holidays have family here, and as the disruptions have unfolded, they’ve been able to stay with relatives and away from the airport until their new flights are scheduled.
