Ottawa is passing the buck on this holiday season’s air travel chaos

Against this backdrop of air travel chaos, several key lessons can be drawn. The first and most important lesson is to be pro-active.

Mr. Alghabra spent 2022 playing catch-up rather than leading. He should be the last person in Canada surprised by anything happening at airports during his watch, yet feigning surprise or being firmly in denial, was his and his department’s modus operandi.

The final lesson is accepting responsibility and embracing accountability. The Canadian government’s buck-passing and finger-pointing was both disappointing and damaging.should never be part of the Transport Minister’s tool kit nor should he ever use it as an excuse for his government’s failures. With the alphabet soup of federal players involved in air transportation, from CATSA to CBSA to Transport Canada to Nav Canada to, more recently, PHAC and Health Canada, the buck has to stop somewhere.

CULL WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT JOBS

Following airline de-regulation and transfer of airports to airport authorities Transport Canada lost its knowledge base and hence the ability to fulfill its mandate.

5500 employees at Transport_gc What in the world do they actually do Omar OmarAlghabra Canada Ottawa Trudeau

Nothing sticks to OmarAlghabra The worst minister to happen to transport Canada and all that work in this industry. Longer days, fatigued workers, less workers with larger workloads and poverty wages with little benefits is all that's left after his wake.

Given JustinTrudeau and cafreeland bailed out Air Crapada and got nothing in return for taxpayers, it’s no wonder they have no clue.

AirCanada this is complete bullshit. The federal govt doesn’t run airports, and wasn’t responsible for crowding. Nor weather. Nor cancelled flights. Air Canada however, does have a ‘certain’ role. Not impressed. If there’s a real view here then perhaps exact recommendations?

Read the article. It’s actually spot on and it doesn’t speak to Air Canada. This Minister managed to take our largest airport (YYZ) to worst this summer and topped it off with the worst winter in memory. And he still managed to tweet himself on the back for a successful year.

You lost me at “sprawling bureaucracy”.

Wow. Gotta admire the chutzpah (or stupidity?) of air Canada urging the feds to be tougher here when the most obvious solution (see recent G&M opinion piece on this today) is for feds to do just that, by imposing harsher $$$ penalties on the airlines themselves. 🤣🤣🤣
