With their inefficient fuel use, those luxury flights are heating up the planet and speeding the arrival of cataclysmic outcomes, detractors say.
But while aviation broadly remains a major contributor to climate change, it’s the small number of elite fliers responsible for the greatest bulk of that impact who have drawn the ire of younger generations in particular. Response to Disney’s tweets included calls for carbon taxes on luxury aircraft that emit sizeable amounts of greenhouse gases while only carrying a few people at a time. It’s an idea with some legs: Canada, for example, recently announced it would impose a new 10% tax on luxury aircraft and yachts.
Flight-shaming of celebrities is a pastime unto itself, fueled in part by the rich and famous who brag on social media about their quick, convenient flights.
