Sudden whiteout conditions, significantly reduced visibilities and strong wind gusts up to 70 km/h possible, Environment Canada warns

A winter travel advisory was issued Friday night for Sault Ste. Marie and area in which Environment Canada warned of hazardous driving conditions. The full weather alert issued by Environment Canada follows below: Winter weather travel advisory in effect.Peak snowfall rates of 5 cm/h.Late this evening until early Saturday morning.Travel on Highway 17 along the northern and eastern shores of Lake Superior is expected to be hazardous tonight and conditions will improve early Saturday morning.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. If you must drive, be prepared for areas of poor visibility. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.
