The Bay Area is generally expected to pick up 0.5 to 1 inch of rain Tuesday, while the the Santa Cruz Mountains could measure 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain. Light rain was falling across the Bay Area on Tuesday morning just after sunrise, and showers are expected to continue through the afternoon, potentially into the evening, with some breaks.
"For the most part, we're seeing light steady rain right now," Palmer said."The amounts so far have been about a tenth of an inch an hour. One exception is the Santa Cruz Mountains, they're seeing about a third of an inch an hour. It could get more moderate at times today. I don't want to downplay the rain today, but my bigger concern is the winds."
Winds were starting to develop just south of the Bay Area in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Mountains early Tuesday. "There's a buoy off the coast that's gusting at 45 mph already," Palmer said."We are seeing some gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We think we'll start to see winds pick up across the Bay Area in the next couple of hours."in effect in the Bay Area through 9 p.m. Tuesday, with southerly winds up to 40 to 50 mph possible across the Bay Area and isolated gusts likely exceeding 50 mph.
