El Cajon leaders are moving to punish hotels that are sites of serious crimes, after two men in a county-funded program wereCouncil members are also discussing a moratorium on new homeless vouchers, although it’s unclear if that could survive a legal challenge.
The PATH staffer said a client, Lawrence Cantrell, had recently admitted to “sexual contact with a minor,” according to a statement from the El Cajon Police Department. “As an organization dedicated to serving the most vulnerable in our community, we firmly stand against any act of violence or sexual misconduct,” PATH added.
El Cajon leaders drew little distinction between PATH’s work and the voucher program, arguing that the county has irresponsibly helped house dangerous people in the city. The most recent arrests might only be the tip of the iceberg, council members said. A message left with the Motel 6 was not immediately returned. A spokesperson for county Supervisor Joel Anderson declined comment., including requiring more robust background checks.
