Recalling the adoption of “Sabah” as the new name for the state after independence, Daily Express Chief Editor James Sarda said last colonial Governor Sir William Goode tried to encourage then Legislative Council Member for Non-Muslim Native Affairs, Donald Stephens, to follow Sarawak’s example and not change the name into something unknown back in 1959. However, Stephens, who tabled the motion, refused saying North Borneo sounds like some place with a lighthouse on it.
